16-year-old girl arrested for hitting father who was spanking her

No, only the parent, until she is 18 and moved out.

If it's not acceptable to beat a stranger or a spouse if you don't like their behaviour, why is it fine to beat your child? I'm sorry, but IMHO anyone needing to beat a 16 year old has already failed as a parent.

You are confusing definitions, no where do I condone "beating" by anybody. Spanking/Whipping is not beating. Now, it can be taken to that level, at which point it would be wrong, but disciplining outright by spanking is not beating.

Which parent? What about step-parents?

And what happens after she's 18 - is that a magic number that says "you can no longer spank me?" What if she's eighteen and still living at home? Or 17 and no longer living at home?

Using a belt is (IMO) unacceptable, but against a sixteen year old young woman is ridiculous. Spanking a sixteen year old girl is unacceptable for any male authority figure as a form of punishment. Find another method.

I tend to see abuse as the kind of thing that can leave serious injury or damage. Belting is not that. From what I've read she seems like a bit of a wild child and parental discipline was definitely in order - including belting.

That said, however, she had every right to fight back, and the police should not have gotten involved AT ALL, much less sided with the father when both were equally guilty of striking each other. I support corporal punishment, but I also support a child's right to defend themselves.

Yeah yeah, duly fixed. Care to address the substance of my questions and argument?

I wasn't really referring to a light spanking, but hitting with a belt or whip is abuse in my opinion. How do you judge what is too far anyway? When it leaves bruises, welts, draws blood?

I guess we will have to agree to disagree, I do not consider spanking or belting or whipping (when used for discipline by a parent) as beating.

Which parent? - Both Parents

Step-Parent? - Negative, only Biological parents should be the disciplinarian

After 18? - I agree there is a limit as to when you should stop spanking, it is really hard to paint a general number on, I said 18 because after that point, they are a legal adult themselves, it is indeed hard to paint a magical number.

You may think, generally speaking, spanking should not occur on a 16 year old, but every situation is unique, and it is hard to say that it is wrong for every situation. My sister is 15, and believe you me she definitely needs a whipping!

Yay, rational discourse! :techman:

What if the step-parent is doing the rearing though, and one of the biologicals is not in the picture for whatever reason? I assume with adopted children you'll let adoptive parents count as biological.

I think, not generally speaking, but absolutely speaking, spanking should not occur on a sixteen year old. That's just far too old for spanking/whipping style discipline; if you need corporal punishment, find another one, but sixteen-year olds should be moving past corporal punishment. Really, anything past puberty is sketchy at best in this situation, which is way I said 8-12, depending on maturity and relationship.

Well, if there are no biological parents in the picture, then someone has to discipline the child, so I guess in that case you have no choice, discipline must happen and I firmly believe in spanking to discipline.

Thinking about it further, I think your right that spanking a 16 year old may be going past the line of the age when you should stop spanking. I also agree that it depends on maturity and relationship and if spanking has ever worked as a deterrent. Obviously, if it never worked, try something else.

Really? My sister wouldn't have agreed with you when she got 'belted' with the belt *buckle*.

Suddenly I'm glad that I didn't get arrested at 14 when I decked my father when he was about to take his belt to my 3-year-old brother.

Belting is *not* spanking, it's abuse.

16 is WAY too old for spankings. And hitting a girl like that is...well, not admirable to say the least.

I'm not anti-spanking but I think there should be a cutoff age.

I disagree that belting is abuse. It depends on your intentions and usage. Certainly it can be used as abuse, but it is not inherently so.

My father was disciplined by his father with a branch from a tree. My father disciplined me with a belt when I was a kid. It was never abuse, I never saw it as that then, and I look back and do not see it as that now. Indeed, that form of discipline was a deterrent for me. My father never took it to an abusive level, it was only when I was real bad and deserved it, and it was only a few whacks on the butt.

I have actually thanked my father for disciplining me properly when I was a kid.

Same here, Brent.

Nothing wrong with the belt if used properly.

In this case it was "Tried". In most communities, in domestic violence cases, the individual who is the aggressor is the one arrested..

Officers were most likely following the requirements of the law.

No reason to side with the little crimminal brat.
