Wow. That's the first time I've seen the Cain suit in years. I actually remember really enjoying that show when I was little, but that is just painful to look at now.

Actually that was just an early promo shot of Reeve. He looked a bit bigger in the actual movie (and even bigger in SII).

Ah, I did wonder at how I'd never noticed this before.

I think Routh and Cain were both saddled with suits which failed to make the most of their physiques. If you watch the extras on the SR discs, Brandon was really well built but the suit sort of compresses his muscles. Also, IIRC, Singer said that he didn't want him to look cut or ripped (I'm paraphrasing but that was the gist of it), just strong so they didn't give him the sort of veiny look that Cavill has in MOS.

Cavill to me looks to have been in the best physical shape of any actor to play Superman but I think he's helped also by a suit which does the most to define and show off the body of the actor playing the role. Obviously the colour and texture aren't to everyone's taste as this thread shows but it definitely does a lot to flatter the person in it. Not that he needed much flattering, obviously!

In things like "Chuck" Routh was pretty big. He could have been Cavill sized big with the right training.

But as you said it was the Superman Returns suit that downplayed things.

It's just called being ripped or cut-up. Very low body fat and various techniques for staying pumped up during a shoot. Exercise routines emphasize abs and often the lateral and trapezius muscles of the back.

I note also that WB have announced their comic-con line up. Somewhat surprisingly, there is no official mention of BvS on it. However, with there seeming to be a big emphasis on Batman (not just Gotham, but the onscreen history of the character, it seems likely that there'll be some presentation about the movie:

I always saw the Reeve suit as just a faithful realization of the long-standing suit in the comics. The belt was the way it was, because that's how it was drawn in the comics, and so forth.

Didn't really matter. I was tuning in for the Lois (and Clark) Show. Superman was a minor, recurring character.

I know that you're saying you were basically tuning in for Teri Hatcher (I think most people were), but you've pointed out my biggest problem with that show. Superman was really just a supporting character.

It was sort of okay to take that approach with the Hulk, where he'd show up briefly to resolve the Problem Of The Week, but it used to piss me off that I was watching a show with Superman in the title and getting very little Superman.

Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Sure, it didn't put the focus on Superman at first, but it was a nice angle on the Superman story. And who wants to see the same thing over and over again with each new remake?

Lois and Clark felt like a real breath of fresh air at the time, but I tried rewatching it recently and my god, it's cheesy as hell. And not especially well-written either, with the most obvious and simplistic plots you can imagine.

The only thing that still works is the chemistry between Cain and Hatcher, and pretty much anything John Shea does.

^Technically true, but just as The Incredible Hulk was basically "the adventures of Bruce (or 'David') Banner who occasionally turns into the Hulk (but not all that often)" so was Lois & Clark essentially "let's do a romantic comedy where the guy turns into a super-hero...once in a while". No one's tuning in to see "The Adentures Of Clark Kent".

Superman was a supporting character in Superman Returns also. It's really a Lois Lane movie since we follow her story more than Superman's. She has more scenes and more speaking lines than Supes/Clark.

I thought the Cain/Hatcher show was called 'Lois and Clark.' Was the 'New Adentures of Superman' bit not added by the BBC for the benefit of slow viewers?

The original show wasn't going to feature Superman at all, as I recall.
