‘Superman & Batman’ movie will follow ‘Man of Steel’

It's not about the suit. I'm sick of these little bumps on the suit that make no sense except to make it look better in HD.

With Reeve's Superman, they kept the classic costume.. it might have looked silly that he was wearing undies around his pants, but guess what, it was never actually silly.

It was all about how Reeve carried himself. He imagined he was wearing a three-piece suit and carried himself accordingly. He walked proudly, heroically. That counted more than the silliness of the trunks

No, it did look silly. It looked very silly.

Also, the bumps are just an idea someone tried that they decided looked good. They give the suit an alien feel, which is a good thing, since it is supposed to be an alien suit. This assumption that something must have been done for bs reasons just because you don't like it is dumb.

Yes, the suit looked silly in the old Reeve movies. The tone of those films was very different, though, and leaned toward silliness.

Doubtless the screen-test suit Cavil's wearing in the 2004 footage is an early prototype that would have been changed, refined and quite possibly discarded.

I never thought the Christopher Reeve suit looked "silly". But let's be honest, at the end of the day we're still looking at grown men wearing colorful, skin-tight costumes. I frankly don't see anything less "silly" about Cavill's costume than the ones worn by Reeve and Routh. The texture on Cavill's suit bugs me because it's busy for the sake of being busy. I don't feel like it adds anything to the design. It makes it look like Superman is wearing an outfit made from recycled basketballs. Take away the texture and brighten up the colors and it would be fine.

IMO the Dean Cain suit looks the worst. Routh's suit is actually fairly bright. It's the filter Singer used in the film that makes it looks dark.

I certainly didn't think Reeve's suit was silly as a kid, but now? Yeah just a little. Fortunately though Reeve still makes it work and feel completely natural (and it also fits the style and tone of those movies perfectly).

That being said though, I have a feeling the Cavill suit will age much better over time.

The Reeve suit almost looks like something you can pick up at a Halloween costume shop. It's so smooth and shiny. It looks like a costume more than actual attire.

What amazes me about this serie of photos is just his skinny Reeve looks now. Growing up, he looked, well, like Superman to me. Now he looks rangy and toned, to be sure, but very lean and lithe at best compared to Cavill, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale etc. Probably a reflection on how fitness training, nutrition etc has come on in 35 years or so.

Actually that was just an early promo shot of Reeve. He looked a bit bigger in the actual movie (and even bigger in SII).

That also shows how skinny he was going in. There were articles in the media at the time about how much he bulked up for the role. IIRC, his trainer was David (Darth Vader) Prowse.

Back when the strongman/circus strong man workout was the norm for working out routine/embodiment of a strong guy

What would we call the recent trend in Hollywood with Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth and Henry Cavill be called?

They don't seem to be aspiring towards the strong man type workout anymore.

Just wondering what we would call it.

Ah, I did wonder at how I'd never noticed this before.

I think Routh and Cain were both saddled with suits which failed to make the most of their physiques. If you watch the extras on the SR discs, Brandon was really well built but the suit sort of compresses his muscles. Also, IIRC, Singer said that he didn't want him to look cut or ripped (I'm paraphrasing but that was the gist of it), just strong so they didn't give him the sort of veiny look that Cavill has in MOS.

Cavill to me looks to have been in the best physical shape of any actor to play Superman but I think he's helped also by a suit which does the most to define and show off the body of the actor playing the role. Obviously the colour and texture aren't to everyone's taste as this thread shows but it definitely does a lot to flatter the person in it. Not that he needed much flattering, obviously!
