I seem to remember TOS episodes where McCoy hung out on the bridge with seemingly nothing pressing to do in sickbay, so it's not that much of a stretch.

Save for a few isolated instances at rare points in my life, "The Voyage Home" never really appealed to me. I never liked Trek when they went back in time to the 20th century, that's not why I tuned in to watch in the first place.

We have a used bookstore here that recently closed for business, and they had a nice few shelves of Trek novels. I used to go in occasionally and pick through them looking for favorite stories. That makes one used bookstore left, along with Barnes & Noble and something called 2nd and Charles...

If memory serves, yes, the crew got another starship or something and had some offscreen comic book-only adventures before going back to Vulcan with the bird of prey again in time for STIV.
