I think it likely that in this setting, Kryptonite will be synthetically created to reproduce the effect of the Kryptonian atmosphere on Superman.

Alternately, some Kryptonite might have been created on Earth as an unintended side effect of the aborted Kryptonian terraforming process.

I don't really see why we would need a new origin for kryptonite.

Batman synthesized Kryptonite in TDKR, so that's not a new origin, and given the trailer it would be apropos if they used it.

Why not? I'm sure he gets around quite a bit.

It really would be interesting to see these movies evolve the plausibility of Clark's life and relationships a bit. Superman has a rather proud history of importing stuff back and forth from his incarnations in other media and incorporating it into the overall "mythos."

I just started watching the first (and only) season of Lois & Clark on DVD with a friend; I'd almost forgotten how enjoyable that version of Supes was.

Given the more grounded world this Superman seems to exist in, what I'd love is for a sequel to at least touch on some of the more real world issues and dangers out there, like poverty, war, and terrorism (and not comic book style terrorism like we saw in Superman II or the first Iron Man either).

As much as I loved SR, it always bugged me that we watch Clark catching up on all the war and turmoil going on in the world... only to then spend his time stopping robberies and saving Space Shuttles.

I realize the main focus will always need to be on the supervillains and monsters, but it would still be nice to see the real world at least acknowledged in one of these superhero movies.

The traditional explanation is that Krypton exploded and pieces of the planet spread through space and reached Earth around the same time as baby Kal-El's spacecraft. But now we believe Kal-El's ship possessed a highly advanced propulsion system, allowing him to cross a vast expanse of space (many light-years, I suppose) in very little time. The meteorites from Krypton, on the other hand, travelled through space at sub-light velocity and should have taken millions of years to reach Earth if at all.
I don't think this origin works too well. I still like the general idea of kryptonite, if we can just come up with a satisfactory explanation of how it gets to Earth.

John Byrne took care of this 30 years ago, his Hyperdrive sucked in a load of the stuff.

I've always thought it would make more sense if kryptonite just removes his powers, not kills him. If it reproduces the effect of Krypton's atmosphere, that's exactly what it would do.

Is the reason not that Krypton was poisoned or contaminated before being destroyed and that's why it's fatal to him?

But in MOS, Kal-El's spaceship left Krypton quite some time before the planet exploded. So unless some came with Zod, there is no obvious way that pieces of Krypton could've made it to Earth.

As some have already speculated, it seems like an artificial Kryptonite will need to be made if the writers want a convenient way to artificially weaken Superman.

There could be any number of handwavium explanations for how Kryptonite works in the MOS - verse, but artificially re-creating the Kryptonian atmosphere seems the most in-line with what was established in MOS.

Maybe the first Kryptonians on Earth (whose spacecraft was discovered by Kal-El in MoS) had something to do with the creation of Kryptonite.

I think one of the points some people raise is the issue with Wonder Woman and her costume. I think it's fine, though, I kinda like it. Who knows if she found some Kryptonite on Themiscyra. Somehow.

Agreed. I'd much rather Batman find a way to either recreate the Kryptonian atmosphere (perhaps by reverse-engineering a generator from one of the ships) or generate radiation similar to that of a red sun to cancel out Superman's powers.

Even if you can find a way to plausibly explain it, kryptonite has just been done to death by this point, and I'm really hoping they don't use it.

Kryptonite is radioactive. It's just that the radiation it produces effects Kryptonians much more drastically than humans. Presumably, it's a naturally occurring mineral on Krypton, just as there are naturally occurring radioactive minerals here on Earth.

Maybe they used it to power their engines. Wasn't there something in MOS about the Kryptonians depleting their natural resources? Maybe they were mining it for fuel.

I don't know, a radioactive mineral seems a lot more "grounded" to me than Lex Luthor or Batman inventing something that magically recreates the atmosphere of Krypton.

My question is this: If Krypton's atmosphere kept Kryptonion's powerless, how or why would the sun factor into it at all? And shouldn't they have been on death's door on Krypton if a yellow sun is needed to charge them up while their atmosphere keeps them tuned down?

    It don't make no sense.

I haven't been on here since the WW costume reveal, so I just want to say that I love. I think it's honestly as close to her comic book outfit as we could possibly get in a movie like this.
As for the Krytonite debate, I don't know if I really like the idea of it being artifical. I like the idea of connecting it to the old ship. I could be a naturally occurring mineral on their homeworld that they were studying. I could see a big dramatic reveal with either Bruce Wayne or Lex Luthor digging around in the ship, and suddenly coming across a big collection of Kryptonite.

Poor Metropolis. At some point I'm expecting the city to erect a "Keep Out Superman" sign to prevent any more damage/mayhem.

Well hopefully they're at least destroying a different area of the city this time. Because it would suck if they just destroyed the exact same area that just got rebuilt. :D
