King Kong... sequel???

Is a sequel, a prequel or...a reboot?

Think about it: Legendary has Pacific Rim. They have Godzilla. Now they have Kong.

Everyone wants their own version of the Avengers. DC obviously. Universal is doing something similar to Marvel with its monsters (ind. films then some sort of team up). Fox is making noise about a connected universe with the Marvel properties they own, as is Sony.

So, if you own the rights to a bunch of giant monsters and there's already precedent for an out of continuity KK v G film (campy but beloved), why not reboot the series and NOT kill him off at the top of the Empire State Building? If someone films a movie/reboot where Kong lives, that opens the door to an Americanized KK v G film.

Yeah, the purists will whine, and not without justification, but the recent remake is nearly a decade old already, the one before that is nearly forty years old and the original is 81 years old. A lot more recent, and as beloved, films/characters have been remade, rebooted and/or sequelized into something nigh-unrecognizable for the big bucks. Why should anyone assume Kong won't be next?

KK Vs Godzilla might be difficult. I realize they messed with the sizes in the past and made Kong as big as Godzilla but this new Godzilla is massive. I can't imagine how they are gonna do it. Would they really make the monkey that big to go up against G?

After Kong died in the '33 movie there was a sequel that came out in the same year Son Of Kong. The island sank at the end of it but it is possible to continue telling more stories on the island.

A Kong-like ape was shown roaring in the clip apparently, so my hope is that instead of it being the same solitary ape, they actually have a group of giant apes living on the island, among many other giant creatures obviously.
I can't see why anyone would go to see another "KONG" movie, without it mostly having to deal with a giant ape. I would prefer the "universe" he's set in, to KING KONG, or his relatives/decendents. Like, if they went to this island in search of another KONG, find a group of them, like you say, and maybe this complicated matters, somehow, so that they have to bring something else back. Or maybe it's more scientific in nature and they go to study the island and get in trouble, that way. In any case, there will be an empty place in theatre if it's about another giant gorilla who gets loose in The Big Apple!

Because as bloated and disappointing as Jackson's movie was, I did think he came up with some pretty cool and exciting sequences for the island (not counting the ridiculous dinosaur stampede of course).

That scene is one of the worst uses of greenscreen I've ever seen. At no point was it remotely believable that the characters were running among dinosaurs. And Jackson obviously didn't learn anything by the time of the barrel riding scene in Desolation of Smaug, because that has equally awful interactions between its characters and their surroundings and terrible character physics.

If a lizard can be that big, why not a gorilla? We've already crossed the line into complete disregard for physics and biology with these movies.

One of the kaiju in Pacific Rim basically looked and moved like a giant blue hairless gorilla the size of Godzilla anyway, so yeah, I don't see why they can't supersize Kong either, and/or reduce Godzilla in size a bit to better match them up somewhere in the middle.

King Kong made half a billion dollars ten years ago. That's a lot more when whatever this Skull Island thing ends up being 3D IMAX with a big name in the lead.

There's no guarantee of any big name attached--and even that no longer promises box office gold. Moreover, it all goes back to the Kong premise--which offers nothing new. It is still the worn out ape-on-the-loose concept.

Yeah, but Locutus, you spend all this time thinking about
if they could, you don't stop to wonder if they should.

... Sorry, couldn't resist. :p

For my money, this should be a prequel. Only, I wouldn't have any visitors to the island, except for those primatives, who seem to be of various races, which I found interesting. It would suggest that these are future generations of a marooned group of people, maybe from a ship that sank. People who - eventually - went feral. Showing them coming to terms with their newfound situation would make a really great story, in my opinion.

^ But without outside visitors, how will we learn who drew Carl Denham's map? THE PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW, Universal!

Within the continuity of the Peter Jackson movie, Skull Island was sinking into the ocean and disappeared beneath the waves just a few years after the movie concluded.

Personally, I thought there was a great 90 minute movie lurking within the Extended Edition of Peter Jackson's King Kong. There was some really cool and inventive monster sequences (more in the EE) that I loved. The problem was all the endless "character" scenes with boring uninteresting characters. Cut those out, focus on the monsters, and you have a great movie.

The version PJ was originally going to make in the 90s sounded a lot better, more action packed and in the vein of The Mummy (1999). It opens with them on a hunt across the world for the location of the island being chased by people trying to kill them to keep it secret or something.
