King Kong... sequel???

Where does the sequel idea come from?
The title makes me think a prequel is more likely. I could see a Kong movie set entirely on the island being pretty cool.
I really enjoyed Attack the Block, so I hope Cornish does get the gig.

I'm not sure if I'd even use the term "prequel" since it would not surprise me to find out this has nothing to do with Peter Jackson's 2005 movie. Maybe they might end up marketing it as Kong's life prior to being captured and sent to New York, and leave it vague if it is in fact a prequel to the 2005 movie or the original 1930s one.

One presumes King Kong was from a race of similarly sized animals.

Therefore I propose King Kongs as a working title.

I think that Jackson's King Kong has been the only Kong without a sequel (so far). The original had Son of Kong, the 70's King Kong had King Kong Lives and even King Kong Vs. Godzilla had King Kong Escapes.

Still, it's been close to a decade, will be over a decade by the time this movie is released since the Jackson film. In this day and age where continuity reboots are happening with less time between movies (Spider-Man rebooted 5 years after the third Raimi movie, Superman rebooted 7 years after Superman Returns, Batman being rebooted 4 years after The Dark Knight Rises) there's no real reason to expect this King Kong to be of the same continuity.

Rapid reboots, like everything else, are not the recent innovation people assume. There were maybe a half-dozen screen versions of The Wizard of Oz in the 25 years before the Judy Garland film. The Maltese Falcon was made into films in 1931, 1936, and 1941. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde had two adaptations a decade apart, also in 1931 and 1941.

What is the perpetual appeal of KING KONG, one has to wonder ... is it just the BEAUTY & THE BEAST theme, or ... is it something more primal?

^Yeah, I gather it's more a new Kong project than a continuation of Jackson's world.
I didn't necessarily mean a prequel to the Peter Jackson movie specifically, I just meant a prequel to the Kong story in general.

Regarding the multiple Kongs thing, there was a scene in PJ's Kong in Kong's cave home that showed some giant ape skeletons if I remember correctly.

And in the commentary track, the writers say that Kong was the last surviving member of his species and was all alone.
