i think Spock was returning to Vulcan just because that's where T'Pau was. I never had the impression that all Vulcans had to return to Vulcan to mate. Spock and Saavik managed ok on Genesis. And, for what it's worth, Selar gets her Pon Farr on in the New Frontier novels, and iirc, she consummates on the Excelsior.

KIRK: I guess the rest of us assume that it's done quite logically.
SPOCK: No. No. It is not. We shield it with ritual and customs shrouded in antiquity. You humans have no conception. It strips our minds from us. It brings a madness which rips away our veneer of civilisation. It is the pon farr. The time of mating. There are precedents in nature, Captain. The giant eelbirds of Regulus Five, once each eleven years they must return to the caverns where they hatched. On your Earth, the salmon. They must return to that one stream where they were born, to spawn or die in trying.
KIRK: But you're not a fish, Mister Spock. You're
SPOCK: No. Nor am I a man. I'm a Vulcan. I'd hoped I would be spared this, but the ancient drives are too strong. Eventually, they catch up with us, and we are driven by forces we cannot control to return home and take a wife. Or die.

Now think carefully about what happened to Vulcan in the 1st movie

That was a joke in the new Muppet movie I saw yesterday.

The beginning of the new movie starts with the end credits from the last Muppet movie, where they're all about to go home, when someone notices that the cameras are still following them, who says "OMG! WE'RE DOING A SEQUEL!" And then they break into song about how they're doing a sequel, and then 8 lines in, they admit that all sequels suck, but this one is going to be different, and then Professor Bunsen Honeydew (From Muppet labs) sings "I don't mean to be a stickler, but this movie is actually our 7th sequel since the original Muppet Movie in 1980."

Congratualations Melakon: You're as funny as a Muppet Movie. :)

The one thing I like about this episode though is that Tom doesn't take advantage of B'Elanna and you see some spark that will foster their relationship later on.
