Twenty years since "The Jem'Hadar"

"New Ground" is another datapoint for point-blank torpedo fighting being a very poor idea. Arguably the shields of the ship are compromised in that episode, too. But "Jem'Hadar" features even shorter engagement ranges than the two TNG episodes: the realization that phasers aren't going to do the trick comes at such a late stage in the engagement that Keogh would need to pull back, and he doesn't want to do that because he protects the runabouts. And eventually the Odyssey shields are compromised and lowered, too.

It was fun to observe a not completely inept guest crew in action, sort of like proto-Robau. And even more fun to see how they wrote Keogh into such an almost-Picard, with quirks that could be sympathetic on a main character and only become unsympathetic because some of them are directed against our main heroes (Keogh's dislike of Dax vs. Picard's dislike of Ro, Keogh's concern for the lack of punching power for DS9 combatants vs. Picard's similar concerns for somebody's safety in a battle).

Agreed. I thought that was a neat narrative trick and I'm glad that you brought it up. We've seen antagonistic Starfleet over and over again, and Keogh came across initially as smug and haughty (because of the Galaxy-class?). But the instant we see the inside of the ship thrashing about violently in that paradox of darkness and fire, with Keogh and his crew doing their best to keep the ship together, it suddenly changed everything. And that he was willing to give O'Brien more time to search for Sisko even while his ship was getting shredded, and then his smile when O'Brien reports the good news, just added more humanity to Keogh.

I'd always assumed that the ENT-D was sufficiently damaged by the initial attack from the BoP that they weren't able to retaliate with all of their firepower (damaged systems, power down across the ship etc).

The Odyssey was in a similar situation- as their shields had no effect on Jem'Hadar weapons, it was like a man wearing no armour trying to fight three suicidal men in full battle plate- sure, you could strike them, but if your only objective is to buy time for O'Brien, using all of your energy distribution on firepower might not be the best tactical option.

Yep - easy rationalisation, and all it would have needed was ONE LINE from Worf or Data like "heavy damage to weapons array, effectiveness at 25%" and we would have been spared 20 years of bashing that scene!

I wonder why a Constitution-type saucer came out of the Odyseey when it exploded. Was it in its cargo bay?

The initial explosions caused the Odyssey to go back in time to meet the ORIGINAL Odyssey (Constitution class), changing the timeline. Through a variety of odd circumstances it was calculated that if the original Odyssey did not go back through the time-hole to take the place of the Galaxy-class Odyssey, all of humanity would be destroyed. So in they drove and out it came! Crazy episode.

Welll its looking more and more likely there will never be an HD version to make that more obvious....

That smashed up saucer from TSFS sure showed up everywhere didn't it?
