I loved SG1 but felt Atlantis was very uneven; I never connected with any of the characters, but I liked that it was in the Stargate Universe. However, with SGU, I always felt like I was watching something like was produced by a corporation was that merely filling in the required blanks. The tone felt forced, the characters' motivations seemed unrealistic and cliched song-montages at the end of the episodes made me cringe. Hubby called it "Stargate:Galactica." I kind of agree with that; I could almost hear the suits saying, "BSG was successful, so let's make this third series just like that!"

That was almost certainly the case, though I don't know if it was the show runners' decision or the network's. And I don't think that was such a bad thing given that BSG took scifi to a new level and was well received. I was certainly open to more shows doing that and still am. The writers just weren't up to the task at first. I remember one person here saying that SGU copied BSG's style but not its substance, and someone else said that they weren't writing from life, they were writing from other TV.

The tone of SGU was much different than Voyager. Still, those who didn't like it compared the two unfavorably (at least that's how I remember it).

I could see that as a dismissive comment but I do find it really unfair. Not just as a fan but because it really doesn't fit at all.

By the end of SGU you had the original premise of Voyager the two enemy crews working together on a ship which probably would never make it home and exploring the unknown. However without the reset key seen in almost every Voyager episode beside the Year of Hell the limited resources and being unable to control their own ship was more like Space 1999

However there is also that BSG influence ending with the crew fighting Cy.., I mean automated drones.

Same here. I don't think either SG-1 or SG-A are stellar writing of any sort (I see them as rehashes of TOS and TNG respectively, with a twist that it's all happening us the "real" us humans)

But they are fun to watch though, like sitting down to watch some of the best TOS or TNG episodes.

I hated every character except Eli, and the sex scenes were gratuitous just for the fuck of it.

I'm not surprised the series tanked.

I seriously recommend you give it another chance. I had the same exact reaction to the show when I first tried to watch it. Then I gave it a longer leash post-cancellation and ended up loving it. It really improved as it went on.

I love SGU mainly becaus eof the characters and i tihnk they did the idea of being stranded lightyears from home more realistically than Voyager. That said they did have a few problems mainly the amount of time they spent visiting earth with those silly stones but they fixed that later on

SG1 I also love i remmber watching the episodes every week when it was firts on tv. It lost me a little in the last couple seasons with ori but it was still good. I really love how i can just be in an SG1 mood and pop on a random episode and watch without having to remember everything that happened on the series up to that point and there is always a cheerful feel good vibe to the series.

SGA i watched and i like quite a few elements in the series but i dont love it the way that i do SG1 and SGU. SGA had great potential but didnt quite hit it off imho.

On the whole i love both SG1 and SGU equally to me they are different shows and not really comparable.

SG1 & SGA are both pretty fun to dip in and out of, which I did both at the time of original airing and every since in reruns. I've still not seen every single episode of each series, but have doubtless seen most by now. They're easy watching and while there are a lot of mediocre episodes, there are some really engaging ones too. SG1 has the edge in terms of fun character interaction but SGA has its moments too.

SGU is a totally different beast. I never really got into it, but the last half a season hints that it could have grown into something more substantial over time.

It did seem strange that a bunch of explorers, they didn't draft people for the Stargate program reacted more like Galatica's crew than Voyagers when the previous Stargates had happy soldiers fighting for the freedom of all of humanity

He's competent enough (no bumbling Jonathan Archer for sure), but there's just something about his demeanour and manner I find very off-putting. I'd go so far as to rank him at the bottom of my "Top 5 Main Character Colonels" (Carter, Mitchell, Sheppard, Young, O'Neill).

Really, hmm, that's interesting as O'Neill is the main reason I like SG-1. He was sort of a fresh take on a series that was basically cloning the ideas from Star Trek TOS and TNG, but giving us that tongue-in-cheek "this is silly" stuff that you'd expect from people that aren't into Sci-Fi.

I also liked Daniel's take as O'Neill's foil, so to speak.

I enjoyed SGU. I loved the premise, the production design, characters, everything.

I agreed with ending SG-1 when it ended. The priors and all that could've become the goa'uld - cool in the beginning but after 8 seasons it just gets old.

I wish Atlantis had continued to a proper wrap-up.

I didn't really like SGU first half of S1 when it originally aired, but, I stuck with it for the mystery, the Arc, and because Stargate shows could always be counted on to be at least pretty decent. I pretty much wanted to space just about everyone, except for Eli, especially Greer, Young, Rush and Camille. It was quite a struggle getting through that first half season. Then they started to lighten up a bit, and the longer the show went on, the more often I found myself enjoying the episodes, and I thought it was really becoming pretty great by the time it ended, and I was sad to see it end so soon.

On a rewatch, although, I still don't think most of the first half season was excellent, it was more enjoyable then my initial reaction to it. And I did gain a whole new appreciation for Greer, Rush and Camille in those early episodes (though, Young, I still don't really like). I initially really, really hated Greer until that episode where he and Camille trapped together, and then I started not disliking him and eventually really enjoyed his character.

Of the Stargates, I'm generally a fan of what was originally intended to be called Stargate Command (i.e. Seasons 9-10 of SG1). That said, I generally really enjoyed the totality of SG1 and was cool with Atlantis up unitl they killed Weir for no good reason (the producers treatment of Torri Higginson was appaling).

I must admit that I was not an SG:U fan when it began. It felt like a cross between BSG and that SG1 parody that was done in "200" with the younger version of the cast. I was never a fan of Rush since he was the show's Dr. Smith and seemed devious for no good reason. I HATED Greer with a passion because frankly the angry black man is such a massive cliche and seriously pissed me off. SG:U also suffered from the fact that season 1 was incredibly slow. There were whole episodes where nothing happened. Plus the civilian/military conflict felt forced to the point where I thought Young would have been justified in throwing the entire civili contingent out an airlock. Plus, the Lucien Alliance as villians...really? Those guys were a joke for the SGC.

Season 2 was much improved, but I admit that I didn't watch that or even the latter half of season 1 until after the show was canceled and on Netflix.

Weir wasn't the only character they killed off, they did the same with Beckett. They eventually had to bring him back after the fans made clear their dissatisifaction with that decision.

I loved SG1. I was not really a fan of SGA in the beginning because it had a lighter tone compared to SG1. But SGA grew on me and i eventually started liking the show. SGU was my favorite. I really loved it's dark tone. The Stargate franchise has alot of potential for new shows and books. Perhaps a new movie even.

I'm rewatching SGA right now, and I can't see the lighter tone compared to SG1. My impression is that it's a lot more violent, scarier, and a lot darker.
