Stargates

You have to wonder if the communication stones had a set range, if there would come a time when they wouldn't be able to communicate with Earth and they were well and truely alone.

What I never understood about SGU was how there could be stargates on the planets they visited. Destiny was on a voyage to unexplored parts of the univers and headed to multiple galaxies. So how can there be gates on all of these planets

Because there was a ship flying ahead of Destiny putting Stargates on those planets. There was a whole episode about it.

2 "Seeder ships" were sent weeks/months ahead to seed M-Class planets with the same naquadah free "mini-gates" Destiny uses.

We see one in season 2.

For me, SG-1 was a bunch of fun, and in some ways (at least some episodes) Star trek done right. We had a bunch of great characters..including a senior officer (general/Admiral type) who was NOT a jerk/hampered our heroes for the fun of it. By the end...Cam was a great character, but the Ori just seemed like the Christian version of the G'Ould, and not original.

Atlantis had some great ideas and SOME characters, but a quite a few underdeveloped ones.

The wraith just seemed kinda hokey...Teyla never really got a good grasp of her character (her purpose & no tension in any way with the crew, at least as i remember it). And poor Lt. ford..he should have been the ironic veteran of SG missions who was teaching his commanding officer how SG missions worked.

Universe's first season was so depressing and bleak -- i could hardly connect with the characters. The stones REALLY ruined it for me, since they were just a cheat. A FAR BETTER device would have been flashbacks to previous Stargate missions (whether Atlantis or SG-1 type)...you could have guest starred previous crews and used previous sets, but just as a way to develop the cast, most of whom had a history with the Stargate program in some way. Seasons 2 introduced some need humor, and i started to like it.

I also remember a star map showing all the galaxies Destiny had travelled to.

SG1 was in some ways like TOS. It felt like humanity was just getting its foot wet into the vastness of the universe.

It was pretty much done by S5 though. Once Daniel came back, O'Neill became a caricature of himself. The whole Ori business was super boring. We all knew some magical ancient weapon would defeat them. It did have its gems though, like figuring out how to block telepathy.

Atlantis I see a lot like TNG, although very dumbed down. It seriously had potential, but they decide to play it extremely safe, which made it boring other than the breakout character, McKay. The most fun in Atlantis was with the minor characters, like Zelenka and Lorne and the bunch. I never got the point of Ronin. He was male Teyla, which in turn was female Teal'c.

I still enjoyed it, but it seems to lose a lot of its fun by end of S3. Once Carter was onboard, it just went downhill.

I saw like 2 eps of Universe. Having a gratuitous sex scene like 30 seconds into the intro of this show already screamed "nuBSG" clone to me.

Then in the next episode, having Carlyle screaming his head off because this is how "conflict" is achieved (according to the writers) pretty much nailed it for me, and I turned it off.
