Only a few weeks to go until Episode 3. Can't wait! And for those who might not be aware it's a Mirror universe story.

On another note things I definitely have no wish to see on any future STC episode:
    - We've had Michael Forest (and it worked), but please no more veteran TOS actors reprising their roles especially the main cast playing older versions of themselves in some stupid time travel gimmick episode. Phase II has done it and it just undermines the whole suspension of disbelief.
    - Keep any connections to other productions vague and indirect. Please, no overt continuity porn. On this point I'm crossing my fingers in regard to the upcoming Mirror Universe episode.
    - The idea has been put forth but I, for one, do not want to see any crossovers. Keep it TOS.
    - If they do Klingons or Andorians then please let them be the TOS variety and not the TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT era variety.

I wouldn't mind seeing Michael Dorn as a Worf ancestor. It's not without precedent ...

Already we have people wanting callbacks or guest-appearances...Whatever happened to ''explore strange NEW worlds''?

It's almost hair-pulling how people are so unwilling to try NEW things. Despite producing some good entertainment, Phase 2's upcoming films have the return/first appearance of Carol Marcus (Holiest Thing), the planet of roman centurions in Bread and Savagery, and Klingons in Mindsifter.

STC brought back Apollo in its debut episode, Orion slave women in its second, and the Mirror universe in its third.

The closest thing to seeing new concepts in these two series was in the episode Enemy:Starfleet which ultimately felt more like a TNG type of episode, all out in space with no deep examination of the two clashing cultures. But they get points for trying something new there...

(dang, I feel like I'm really repeating myself often these days...sorry for being a broken record, folks)...

What appealed to me about "Lolani" was much the same thing that I like about "The Tressaurian Intersection": that the callbacks are few and the story is about something we haven't seen before in that particular world. I have no interest in "greatest hits" stories.

Agreed. Picking up a thread (of sorts) from something before and fleshing it out in a novel way can work (as was done with "Lolani"), but rehashing what was already covered well enough before is not going forward.

A fair precedent I think was TAS. It purportedly carried on the 5-year mission and in large part it did offer us new stories with the added bonus of showing us things that couldn't have been done live-action before--in that sense the new fan productions can follow that approach. But TAS also fell down (for me anyway) when they went back to things that were essentially a waste of time. "More Tribbles, More Troubles, "Mudd's Passion" and "Once Upon A Planet" were each something that didn't need to revisited again. Now "Yesteryear" was a revisit of sorts (to the Guardian Oof Forever) but they used it in an interesting way, to tell a personal story about Spock's youth. Here they managed to cover that ground without using the flashback sequence gimmick. They actually put the adult Spock back into his own past to revisit his youth. On a personal note that would be truly weird to see yourself firsthand (or your parents when young) from an adult perspective.

Something like "The Pirates Of Orion" could be seen as having something of a kinship with "Lolani" in that both picked up on something mentioned, but not really explored in TOS: Orion slave women and Orion pirates.

That kind of story I can get behind. But revisting places and/or characters we saw plenty enough of before is not a good idea, in my opinion, and certainly is not in the spirot of the original series which these productions are supposedly trying to perpetuate.

i would've said don't do mirror universe stuff. its such a fanwanky thing to do.

in fact, the only thing more wrist-achingly fanwanky would be an episode with both khan and the doomsday machine.

or wil wheaton guest-starring as a time-travelling wesley from when he had magical traveller powers.

YES!!! This is why I just added Lolani to my list of "Quick Pick Treasures" at Star Trek Reviewed!

Now there's an idea! Get Wil Wheaton involved!

Seriously, the only reason I suggested Dorn was because he's ... Michael Dorn. I bet he'd jump at a chance to glue that rubber stuff on his head again. And those teeth, he loved those things.

But really, sincerely, I don't care to see anyone from previous series in new fan productions. What I would like to see is people with real acting experience, professional quality makeup, and costumes that fit the actors. That really bugs me about most fan films. If you can't make costumes and makeup that looks good, the quality of sets and effects just goes down the crapper.

So, who's with me? Wheaton? How about Gorshin's corpse?

I think that last one might have very interesting implications, and it would depend on the story. No 'Wesley as the Traveler' stories were ever done. That said, Wheaton is going to be quite busy as a talk show host, so I doubt he'd be available for fan films.

Revisiting a character or situation IMHO is not bad in and of itself, but doing that INSTEAD of having a good story is bad. If I came up with a socko TOS story which involved a less-than-honest businessman importer/exporter/trader would it really be so much better to NOT use Harry Mudd? On the other hand, to try to come up with a story that fit Harry Mudd just to bring him back and having a less good story for that would not be a good idea.

The problem is the dirty joke/porn problem. People use naughty words or pictures INSTEAD of having a funny joke or a good story. Likewise, revisits.

I have my reservations about the Mirror Universe story. That said a podcast I listened to some time back featuring James Kerwin, Eps. 3's director, suggested that the story might focus entirely on the MU and not involve another instance of crossing over. It suggested picking up on the idea of what the MU Kirk and company faced when they got back to their own universe. Now I have nothing solid other than what I got from the interview. That and the claim that the STC folks want to keep tie-ins to other series and films tenuous and vague, based on the assumption that in 1969 none of those other things existed yet so in fairness they shouldn't be mentioned outright in an STC episode.

    For now I'm just hoping.

To be honest, when I first heard it was going to be a mirror episode I kind of groaned. Just not something that I thought was an avenue to go down at this point for STC. After reading the script I was excited about the story. There was some great footage shot and what I've seen of the edit makes me believe that this will be STC's strongest episode; I hope so. From what I know of STC4; it will be a stand alone episode with no tie-ins to any stories we have seen before with TOS. Should be very cool.

I believe a majority of fans will be happy with STC 3 and I'm really looking forward to the release. There will be of course those that don't care for it and that's cool too. To each his own. :)

I guess I just don't want any tie-ins to the MU stories in DS9 and ENT.

I have hopes too, but the story of Mirror-Kirk's return has been done again and again in the various tie-in media.

A mirror episode? Ugh - never been a fan of those, even in the original. And this is probably another bottle show. Time to do something new...

I'm not a fan of the mirror universe, but so far STC has a really good track record for producing quality shows... granted, that's only two shows... so I strongly encourage people to hold their fire and see what there is to see.

I get the dislike for MU episodes (and the DS9 ones are a mixed bag)...but I wouldn't mind seeing another TOS one. And curious if they could cleverly link this one to In A Mirror Darkly. The one technical drawback to fan MU episodes I can see is that in the series they worked best after a few seasons once the actors had a chance to get under the skin of their parts and audience grown to love them, so that the character-switch is more palpable and fun. After two eps of STC seems a tad...ambitious :). But best of luck :techman:

While I enjoy Mirror, Mirror" and even "In a Mirror Darkly," I've never understood the fascination with going back to the Mirror Universe again and again. Really, how many variations on that story can we do?
