Orphan Black - Season 2 Discussion

After thinking about the episode some more and going to the Easter Vigil mass, Might as well write some more about it.

In my quick post last night, I mentioned how this episode kept the momentum of the season finale and it just ran from there. That was the thing I appreciated the most about it. Here was a show that I absolutely love but we had to wait close to a year between new episodes. How would the show come back? Was my anticipation leaning towards Overreaction? Would my expectations not be met because I was so excited for the show to come back?

Thankfully, that's what this episode provided. I wish I could say it was classic Orphan Black, but with a show that only has 10 episodes, how "classic" is it? Well, it had everything I liked about season 1. Felix being the comedy relief at the club, Felix and Alison, Sarah being the action type, Sarah impersonating another clone (in this case Cosima) and then that cliffhanger ending, which I really hope they explain next week. I was reminded about shows where you get a great season finale, but the season premiere leaves something to be desired, and the show with the best example of that is Voyager. Voyager had great season finales, like Scorpion or Equinox, but the season premieres kind of loss something, even though I find Scorpion II much better than Equinox II. Orphan Black's premiere felt like a continuation of the finale, and that non-stop action just kept building that momentum, not destroying it.

This show started to hit the ground running with the Train scene, and the second season has started much the same way, picking up right where we left off and we have our storylines for Season 2. I'm excited that we're going to get more on the Proleathians this season, which will really help build this overall universe. Season 1 was about getting to know the characters, especially Sarah. It looks like Season 2 will be more behind the scenes of the big picture and I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

One thing about this show that I love too is most shows like this makes me begging for the writers to answer the questions and it feels like they are just dragging. I know it's popular around these parts, but that was my biggest problem with Ron Moore's BSG. They took their sweet time on the whole Cylon Plan only to reveal that they didn't have one and that really annoyed me. Here, the tension is so strong that I don't have time to think about nagging questions, and even if I did, They are answering those questions. For example, to find out at the end where Kira was was great, and the reveal was creepy as all hell. Seeing her on the bed with the Camera rolling was unnerving, especially when we see what they did to Helena.

As for the Helena reveal, when I heard her theme, my first response really was "holy shit". I'm still thinking about it today, but it is more I've never been so happy to hear Helena's theme like I was last night. Heck, I've heard people call it annoying, or I even heard someone compare it to Britney Spear's Toxic and all I could think after last night's episode was, yeah that's why we have her theme. Was a brilliant use of the score, something this show is also really really good at.

^^^I love Helena's theme too, in fact it was that theme that made me realize how much I love the main theme.

I can't recall off the top of my head, but there's an episode where Helena's theme is just in full effect, then all of a sudden the credits start and we completely switch tones with the series theme. It was just a perfect (near) blending of the two themes. It's something I am going to look forward to when I revisit season 1 after I get my blurays in the mail (better late than never I say).

Not really pertaining to the episode, but I just want to point out what other's have been saying about Tatiana and her playing so many roles. It is probably the thing that pulled me into the show...I mean what other show can you say has an ensemble cast all played by the same person? Outside of comedies that is, where it can be quite common (Monty Python).

Oh right, one more thing. Rachel. She was briefly introduced at the end of Season 1 but she appears to be a major player this season. I love her btw (but I'm sure we all do). I am curious if she's another clone though.

Didn't Tracey Ullmann have a sketch-comedy show where she played a bunch of different recurring characters? Tracey Takes On or something like that?

Yes, naturally. She's even been nicknamed the "ProClone" (by Sarah in the season finale, I think, and by people writing about the show ever since). Although that does make me wonder why she's so willing to push through legislation and court decisions that would define her as a piece of property.

One thing I almost missed: When Rachel was tying Leekie's bow tie, I could swear she called him "Dad." It would make sense if Leekie himself were the biological father of all the clones.

Yeah, after I posted the question about Rachel I came across her page on the Orphan Black Wiki (they have Wiki's for everything!) that mentioned she was a clone. I'll just assume that was mentioned in her first appearance as it's been a while since I've seen season 1. That will be remedied soon though!

The only information I could gleam from the wiki was that she is the only clone who is happily working with her creators. I'm sure we'll find out why she's knowingly working with someone who wants to dub her as property soon.

Well, Helena was brainwashed by religious extremists. Though the Neolutionists could be just as bad in their own way.

Maybe not as strong a term as brainwashed. Rachel might have been treated with "love" and had her mannerisms ingrained somewhat differently than Helena.

I'm glad Helena is back too. She's the best example of Tatiana's abilities.

I love her too. Rather than her just being another clone she's actually Sarah's sister. I hope they explore that more this season (though I figure they will).

I haven't seen the season premiere yet but I saw Orphan Black: The Cloneversation.

Thanks for that :techman:. Interesting viewing. Unlike the guest stars, I wasn't that won over by S1 pilot/premiere, though intrigued enough to stay. But by ep 2 & 3 with arrival of Alison and Cosima, was bowled over by Maslany's performance. Looking fwd to catching S2 premiere and Helena :)

I recorded Orphan Black because I thought the show looked interesting (and it was convenient, being on after Doctor Who). I was hooked by the end of the first episode, this is a show that sucked me in and refuses to spit me out.

According to the IMDb trivia section, one of the show runners said he wants 8 seasons and a movie. If the show can evolve and expand like Dollhouse, I'll be happy.

As long as they can keep the quality up, I have no problem with that. I just don't want them to overstay their welcome.

I'm not sure what prompted me to get into a new series. Maybe it was random that I was watching the episode when I switched to BBC America one night and the premiere was on. Decided to watch the on demand version and was hocked when Beth committed suicide. The second episode really made me love the show, and here we are.

I binge-watched the entire first season in the two days leading up to the S2 premiere, and I'm hooked.

As has already been said, Maslany does a fantastic job differentiating between the different clones and giving them distinct personalities, accents, quirks, and so forth. It's especially evident when she's playing one of the clones imitating another while alternating between traits of both. It's really a superb performance.

I'm glad Art is finally up to speed on things.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.

That's a common theme among fans I've been noticing, getting hooked right when Beth commits suicide. I can't recall if I was hooked at that moment, but I know I was definitely intrigued. I had an idea the show was about cloning, but I didn't know to what extent.

I have a feeling this might be a break out season for Art. I remember one of the complaints about the first season was Art seemed to be a little flat. Well, I think he started out that way to bring in the procedural crowd, but by the end of the season where he was getting really close to finding out about Sarah, he really started to come into his own. Now that he knows what's going on, I'm excited to see how he fits into the Season 2 storylines. Now if only we can get rid of Angeles.
