I just finished the first season. Really interesting how it ended there. I know a lot of events of the story are exaggerations of the author's real time in prison, I'm very curious if there really was an incident where she beat the crap out of a girl trying to kill her. And if not, if they're doing this to give the character a longer sentence than the author's real sentence and continue the show.
Jenji the producer/writer has frequently said the book was a jumping off place, but that it was never her plan to "do" Piper Kerman's life. I haven't read the original book yet, but from what Kerman has said in interviews, my impression is her prison experienced suggested the guards were meaner and the lesbian sex minimal if present at all. Pennsatucky became a friend, "Red's" real nickname was "Pops" and became such a mother figure for Kerman that she dedicated the book to her. In honor of the impending season 2... Do you know if there's a website somewhere that sorts out the differences between the book and the TV show? Like, I've been told that she did accidentally insult the food in front of the chef but she was never starved. And while I certainly believe the guards were dicks I have a hard time believing the character of Healy in the second half of the season. Healy turns into bigger scum than Mendes.
