"Orange" is based on Piper Kerman's memoirs re: her time in a minimum security woman's prison, for a crime she committed 10 years ago. But although the writer-producer Jenji Kohan uses the memoir as a stepping off place, she quickly takes her protagonist,
Piper Chapman, into twists and turns that the real Kerman never experienced.
We follow this upper middle class WASP as she loses not just her freedom but her position in society and sense of self. She becomes Alice and her Wonderland is called Litchfield Federal Penitentiary in New York State.
Kate Mulgrew, for want of a better term, plays the
Queen Of Hearts for 12 of 13 eps.
In "Orange", Kate's name is
"Red" and she's a Russian-American prisoner who runs the prison kitchen.
There are two important things to remember about OitNB.
The
first is that
despite the thesis that we are following
Piper in her journey from Park Slope, Brooklyn yuppie to Litchfield convict, this is truly an
ensemble show. We become involved if not downright embroiled in the lives of many other inmates, a couple of guards and 2 prison administrators.
The
second is that Jenji Kohan never met a "women in prison" trope she didn't like
AND that whenever Kohan uses it she turns it upside down and inside out until she's sure that even the blindest among us can see how
ludicrous our own assumptions often are and take steps to change them.
