Seth Macfarlane Should Helm the Next Trek Series

Just because you appear on stage with a guy doesn't mean you have to agree with him when it comes to design.

I certainly wasn't part of either JJ film, thank goodness.
Don't mince words, Rick, tell us how you really feel.

Hmm.

Always thought Rick Sternbach liked what Scott Chambliss did.

Didn't they appear on stage together with all the other Trek production designers at one point?

Nope; I never appeared on stage with those folks. Thanks for including me in the thought, however. :) I had maybe two email exchanges with Scott back before the 2009 film was underway, and then never heard from him again.

Given what happened with Mandel, I wouldn't take it personally. Eaves couldn't even mention what happened to him on his own blog, so I'm not surprised that someone less familiar with you wouldn't take chances.

In Broken Bow, someone called Klaang a "Klingot" before being corrected. Not much of a stretch to call a ship the wrong name, especially when there weren't any Romulans around to take offense.

Apparently, in the new timeline BOPs are called warbirds. It's not really that big a deal. Maybe if they were just referred to as "birds" people could more easily wrap their brains around it.
Why can't Romulans and Klingons both have ships who's names translate into "Warbird" and "Bird of Prey"?

My 11 year old self thought the exact same thing when he saw "Broken Bow."

My 24 year old self concurs. And he can get pretty anal about that sort of thing.

I'd certainly rather have another Abrams movie than most of the Trek we got in the 1990s.

Yeah, Abrams movies do have flaws - they are missing the depth and intellectual, "cerebral" side of old trek (TOS and TNG) and the exploration of ethics, philosophical ideas, and "The Human Adventure".

But they are also not *stale* and *stiff* and *predictable* and *technobabble-filled* - but instead they are BIG and EXCITING and grand in scope and *FRESH* - something trek has missed for a long time.

If you could combine *BOTH* of those aspects - your would have THE *PERFECT* TREK SERIES. (Movie, TV, whatever.)

And after seeing the New Cosmos, I thing that Seth is actually up for it. Though I also miss Manny Coto's work on the final season of Enterprise (he's a HUGE fan too - and just watch his "Odyssey 5" series!)

I would love to see Seth as maybe Executive Producer and Manny Coto as Producer. (Not sure which of those would be "show runner")

And I would love to see quest writer and directors like Bryan Fuller and JMS and DS9/BSG's Moore - as well as other famous novel, short story, TV & movie writers brought in to helm an episode from time time to time...give the show variety. Maybe get some Trek authors like ENT's season 4's Judith and Garth Reeves Stevens and others could pen some episodes 0 people who KNOW TREK and what it's about. (And I *like* Melinda Snodgrass - I would love an episode by her once in a while. And I kinda liked Nicked Sagan too, and some of the older TO and TNG authors - David Gerrold and D.C. Fontana.)

And boy, if we could just get and Neil Gaiman episode of two, in a perfect fantasy world!!!

I think Seth could do well with it. I admit, we haven't seen much of his non-comedy work, but he's a good writer and seems to care about Trek. On the Season 3 TNG Blu-Ray, he sits down with the writers of TNG and talks about Trek and TNG scripts for about an hour and a half.

He really seems like he knows what Trek is about. He's obviously a huge fan and is capable of identifying both the strengths and weaknesses of Star Trek.

Honestly, I just want to see more Star Trek back on TV. Seth has a foothold in the industry, already and I'm sure he has the resources. He also is in close with everyone involved with Trek since the early nineties. He might just convince some of the old writers to come back.

Look at it this way. We've been through Nemesis. You can't get much worse Trek than that. Except for maybe V.

I counter by saying "The Inner Light" (an episode you cited as one of Trek's greatest) is not Star Trek. It's Picard growing old, having a family and learning to play the flute, and would have been better suited to the Hallmark Channel rather than shoehorned into Star Trek's world.

As for the new Kirk's characterizarion, I'm not sure where you got all this "whiny" and "entitlement" stuff from.

The best Trek are standalone stories that aren't trying to "Be Trek". City on the Edge of Forever is greek tragedy in Trek drag, for instance.

To parody something, you should know and love the source material well enough that you could just as easily do it straight. That was true with Young Frankenstein and Galaxy Quest. So someone from the comedy world who seems to be a rabid fan of anything Gen-X would be well qualified.

I am fairly certain that Seth would not create a good Trek series. He's department is comedy.

But we haven't seen anything of his that isn't comedy. You can't decided what his department is without seeing anything other than that.

He's a writer. I'm sure he knows how to write non-comedic fiction.

Weeeelll, my take is, MacFarlane's a huge fan, and he understands the series. So I'd let him pitch it, but I shure wouldn't gaurantee a green light until I was really confident the ifdea would not just fly, but drag in a sufficient audience.

As for PineKrk v ShatKirk, really? They're both Kirk, just at different places on the line of their lives. You'd underestimate PineKirk at your peril. He just hasn't ascended into greatness yet. Also, watch Shat's film where he interviews all the captains, it's pretty interesting.

Macfarlane is a true trek fan and thats what we need.

If so, that's a good reason to be optimistic about Bob Orci directing the next Star Trek movie - there's probably not a truer Star Trek fan in the business. :)

Then what happened to STiD?

You proceed from a false premise, which is that everyone - or even most - Trek fans agree about what "Star Trek" ought to be. I'd bet you real money that if a random, frequent poster from TrekBBS were grabbed up by Paramount and put in charge he or she would not turn out to be someone whose ideas you loved.

Just look at the goddamned food fights on this board over every trivial aspect of the Franchise. I mean, really.

You can fairly call Orci a hundred bad things (including a whacked-out conspiracy theorist, which given what can be read here on TrekBBS seems to be an overlapping set with fans) but don't dare try to pretend for a moment that he's less into "Star Trek" and less knowledgeable about it than any of you. :techman:

Then what happened to STiD?
You mean the STID that's rated 90% from the Audience and 87% from the Critics on Rotten Tomatoes?

You mean the STID that's rated 7.9 Stars on IMDB?

You mean the STID whose gross of more than $467 million worldwide made it the highest-grossing entry in the Star Trek franchise?

That STID?

STID is one of my favorite Trek movies. Can't wait to see what Orci does with the next one. :)
