Like I said earlier, the battle in Nemesis is immense, JJ Trek is spectacular in parts but I don't think there's been enough starship action in either. Too much fistfighting in the last one, I loved the warp chase, but it was way too short, it would have been MUCH better if the enterprise got a few shots off
i rewatched Nemesis for the first time in years due to all these nemesis threads (saw it once at cin and maybe 2-3 times since) and i enjoyed it alot more than any of those times. due to T Hardy being a big deal now it feels like its got a big name villain now (whos actually very similar character to bane) and yes the end battle is immense. There are certain points where the green nebula looks so vast and endlessly huge it really feels like they are in space... plus the helm guy getting sucked out was great. A star trek first? (stolen later by JJ Trek) in fact there seems to be a bunch of stuff that the JJ Treks used(almost like well no one saw it so they won't know) and its nice how it wraps stuff up for TNG, like TUC for TOS. riker/troi, datas journey toward being human, also noticed the First Contact theme used at certain poignant Picard/Data moments. Plus Enterprise in spacedock at the end with the TMP music - like the movies have gone full circle.. yes a bunch of stuff sucks and its a TOTAL WOK ripoff (or more accurately a greatest hits package of previous films esp II & VI, plus Rikers Trek III boot to head) but i find it better now (but not enough to change position as second to last above Insurrection, in the 12 films)
^Hear, hear. I might have enjoyed a true battle of wits between well-matched opponents, a la "Balance of Terror" and TWOK, rather than the Enterprise wallowing around like a garbage scow getting beat up by the uber-ship.
I rewatched it last night, and I agree. While the ships don't quite have the scale or solidity of the JJ films, Nemesis was the biggest and boldest looking of the movies since STTMP. I still rank it 2nd best of the STNG movies and better than several of the older crew's. Certainly not even close to the worst. RAMA
I agree, nowhere near the worst. The film is flawed, but so are all the rest. It looks polished. Amazing what the producers of the TNG films were able to do with the money offered to them by Paramount. The battle in this film was more exciting than anything in the last two films. Plus, you can't really compare Picard in the big chair to Ensign... whoops I meant "Captain" Kirk.
I actually always felt it's the smallest one. Sets are tiny and dark, and except for the car chase, it all takes place in a studio. Which is funny, because TMP, TWOK and TSFS also take place solely in studios, but they feel much much bigger.
No, it really wasn't. The battle in Nemesis was okay, but I wasn't impressed. Now, the events that went down in both of the newer movies? THAT was different, and was very well done.
I loved it, it was great to see just what the Sovereign class could do in terms of weapons and manoeuvrability, even if it was outmatched by the Scimitar. I reckon the E would have been able to take on both of those Romulan warbirds that showed up had it been necessary. I though the starship battle in the previous film was piss-poor, at least this film addressed that.
In addition to the mediocre quality of the battle scene and how it looks like a late 90's computer game FMV scene, the sovereign class was shown to be a rather average berman-era ship that moved around like a carp fish and the bog standard TV series phaser and explosions VFX leaves most users thinking even a Star Wars tie fighter could take the Ent-E down.
I certainly agree the battle scence is dull and poorly executed from a directorial/storytelling perspective - par for the course with this movie! Dull, dull, dull. But I do think you're being just a little harsh in your technical appraisal. The rendering is way ahead of a "90's computer game" and does actually hold up quite well. What games from the 90's did you have in mind for your comparison? I'd love to check one out!
The 3D models in Nemesis in regards to texture, detail and lighting is obviously better than 1990's PC game FMV, but its just the way how the ships and objects are choreographed in that sterile fishes swiming in a tank way that reminds me of the stuff you see on PC games. The visual effects of the pear shape disruptors from the Scimitar are the worst I ever seen, and the quantum torpedoes are mediocre. Compare that to the photon torpedo effects in TMP or TWoK which predates Nemesis well over 20 years! Check out the FMV from PC games like Klingon Academy or the intro to Star Trek - Armada and you'll see the same sort of thing you see in Nemesis.
really? I just dont get that. Scale isnt the sole indicator of a good movie of course, but st6 and st3 especially are very small scale. Nemesis has a larger scale landing party sequence' larger and more sets (the extras on the dvd point out how the scimitar bridge was meant to be the largest seen) the space battles are longer and include more ships. There are even large set-piece action sequences. We get to see romulus and Remus! I really dont think theres much to debate about this aspect of the movie.
Personally I think we're into subjective territory regarding 'pear shaped' disruptors, I don't see a problem with them at all, but I think the quality of the visual effects in the scene overall were excellent, the detail on the Enterprise, the shield hits looked great - much better and more believable than the 'bubble' effect. The only space battle that I rank above it is Return of the Jedi.
Can't disagree but I watch a movie to be entertained, if I want my dose of serious Trek I'll put on Yesterday's Enterprise
That's gotta be the movie's biggest sin. Trek movies are never perfect, but at least 99% of them are entertaining. Nemesis is bland.
