XenForo has a like system. I use the hell out of it on the XenForo forum I post at. Beats having ten million "I agree" or "This" or "QFT" posts.

It's one of the better features of Xenforo (though I'm not crazy about the software at all).

I had no idea that this was illegal in other states. Living in California all my life, I have just accepted it as a normal occurence. Actually, for the people I have known who had bikes, this was their primary reason for buying it in the first place - to significantly reduce their commute time. I have understood this to be the trade-off in choosing to ride a bike; in exchange for the ability to move faster through traffic, you are putting yourself at greater risk of injury or death.

Of course, just because I have accepted this as normal doesn't necessarily mean I like it. I have found it annoying on more than one occasion. And it doesn't seem very safe, maybe in theory but usually not in practice. Do I think it should be made illegal here? I'm not sure.

Can you even use a Like system for free? I would be surprised if it hasn't been patented already.

You can.
Copy writing "like" seems a lot like Trump's failed attempt to do the same with "You're fired!"

But I suppose it's possible. Every time I write, "I like J.," Zuckerberg gets a nickel.

You probably wouldn't be copyrighting the word "like" itself in general usage unlike Trump tried with "You're fired!," but rather the proprietary software on Facebook where clicking a "like button" results in an accumulation of points on that social media post. Another forum or social media site could have a "praise button" or something similar that does precisely the same thing but is permissible because of the different terminology used.

Not that I'm advocating in favor of him pursuing a copyright on the "like" system, but I'm just pointing out that that would probably be how you would go about doing it if you decided to. Though, I'm not even sure if Facebook was the first to use a system like this or if they simply borrowed the idea from somewhere else as well and popularized it even more.

I'm still annoyed that CorporalClegg likes me, but Zuckerberg gets the nickel.

I doubt it's something they could copyright. I've seen "like this post" features on other message boards.

Ugh, this is totally a pet peeve of mine. What you guys are talking about is a patent, not a copyright. JarodRussell used the right term, at least.

Facebook is being sued for violating a Dutch patent that concerns social network design (including "like" buttons.) No word yet on how that's playing out, but given the age of the patent (~15 years) it's not likely to be an issue much longer.

So, no, Facebook hasn't patented it, though they probably have a trademark on the little thumbs-up thingy.

Today, I saw a small car trying to split lanes. The driver was brought back in line by excessive honking and some manoeuvreing pretty quickly, though.
