Actors or actresses who would have made great Starfleet Captains

A "re-casting" thread in one of the forums got me to thinking about this question. Do you have a list of actors or actresses who would have been great Starship captains but never put on the TNG jumpsuit or the funny velour sweaters of yore?

I've thought about this for classic actors of the time of Trek's birth (Chuck Connors, Robert Conrad, John Saxon, Lloyd Bridges, Yul Brynner, a young James Earl Jones -- whose voice would be perfect with the "Space, the final frontier" soliloquy)... but it's worth casting the net wider. Who would you have loved, or would love, to see?

Robert Conrad has been my top choice since I was watching Enterprise and thinking that Kirk's predecessor should have been more of a Robert Conrad type....

    Genevieve Bujold

I'd still like to have seen Claire Danes in the big chair.

I'd love to hear Honor Blackman or Joanna Lumley doing the "Space, the final frontier..." intro, mainly because I think they have such great voices.

Elizabeth Dennehy would also be a great Captain for the next series ;)

Agreed. I've been a Robert Conrad fan since the Wild, Wild West days.

    Edward James Olmos!

Doubt he'd ever do Trek tho...he did BSG on the stipulation that if a bug-eyed monster ever showed up, he was outta there.

    Always have wondered what-if... :)

Saw a 1968 interview of Joanna Lumley the other day, she was so effortlessly charismatic and funny even then.

Honor Blackman is a pretty sterling pick, I think. The kind of woman who got cast to play goddesses and had that ringing-declamation style of acting absolutely down pat.

To go a little more obscure -- he's something of a "that guy" but I've always found him to steal the show in anything he appeared in -- I've often wondered about Maurice Dean Wint (who most people know as the psycho cop in Cube).

Great picks, folks, keep 'em coming!

DW Moffett would have made a great rogue captain on a recurring basis.

Olmos did audition as Kruge in TSFS, and lost because Nimoy felt he was too short to be a Klingon.

Laurence Fishburne, Sigourney Weaver, Gerard Butler, Vin Diesel, and Sam Worthington spring to mind.

    And Kelsey Grammer, but...

What happened to that guy anyway?

Well, this is what they did with him in the novels.

Sam Worthington's a particularly interesting pick, there... he could do a pretty good Youthful Prodigy Captain, I think.

Looks like he's producing a bunch of shows now. (Oh, did you mean his in-character character? Ooops.)

The female captain from Star ship troopers would have made a great captain, but especially a female captain if they didn't have Kate Mulgrew.

Sandra Bullock as a second officer-just to see what would happen.

Tom Hanks- he would blow everyone away (figuratively speaking)

Tom Hanks and Christopher Lee would be nice. I was going to choose Michael Fassbender but I can't see him as anything more then a Commander, and Brian Blessed would make a better Klingon than a Captain.
