I was struck by the possibility that Seska actually thought she loved Chakotay.
I'll go out on a limb here and say that McCoy's old age makeup in 1967 was better and more effective than his old age prosthetics more than twenty years later in "Encounter at Farpoint (TNG)." De Kelley in "The Deadly Years" looked legitimately frail and decrepit (not that he didn't look old and bedraggled in the TNG premiere, but that looked a bit more like studio makeup than the TOS face that was done on a much, much smaller and restrictive budget).
A pretty good episode to use to introduce someone to TNG/Modern Trek. Which version did you show him?

On the season two blu-ray set, there are two versions of the episode. The one that aired, then the version with all the unused scenes (because the script was much longer than standard) re-inserted.![]()
