I guess you missed INTERSTAT and the like? Fandom hasn't changed a bit. The anti-Wrath of Khan/Harve Bennett comments sound very familiar indeed...

DS9 got railed for making the Captain a Religious figure, a small bit for making the Captain black (see: Janeway got hell for being a woman cause TOS said women can never be Captains), the Dominion War, being set on a space station, not downplaying the religion angle.
That's because DS9 is good and the writers took chances with the characters.
Wait you forgot one more! Now, TOS itself sucks too because it's not TNG! Seriously this opinion is getting thrown around these days, it's ridiculous.
Not only that, it's the sayings of yet another obdurate moronic 'fan' trapped in the past unable to progress. No wonder Orci's been angry; I'd be like that, too, with the bunch of obdurates infesting Trek Movie and most sites.

DS9 takes its lumps on these boards, but I gotta agree with the above. I liked it for that reason, too. I think the main characters were stronger top to bottom than in other Trek shows, too. It was also more or less the only true ensemble cast in Trek, too.
