Broadchurch on BBCA

sojourner

In Memoriam
Anyone catch this on BBC America last night? Seems to be another well done series from Britain. David Tennant seems to be having fun in the role of the DI in charge of the case.

My only reservation is I see strong similarities to The Killing's first season.

Recorded it on the DVR, need to sit down and watch it. It's gotten quite good reviews so I'm looking forward to it. Plus, David Tennant!!

Tennant's not the only Doctor Who connection as Arthur Darvill and David Bradley also have significant roles. I was quite impressed with episode 1, which I watched on Wednesday and then rewatched with the wife last night.

It is off to a good start. I liked how they played up that a small town cop will know a lot of their crime victims and so far you are feeling it more then you do in the murder of the week format.

Yes, so far it is very reminiscent to The Killing but I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Don't forget Olivia Colman who plays DS Ellie Miller. She was in the Doctor Who episode "Eleventh Hour".

Columnist in the Toronto Star also makes a comparison the The Killing but points out the season endings it were less than stellar.

Well, I lost interest in The Killing after season 1, so I'm hoping the shorter, and I'm assuming more tightly-constructed Broadchurch will avoid fizzling out. I guess we shall see.

We have seen five episodes of Broadchurch in Australia so far. My best friend and I have quite different opinions on who the murderer might be. It will be interesting to see if either of us are correct.

Just watched the first series over two nights. It was a good show. Very engaging. Don't know what they can do for a second series though since the story was self-contained.

I also read that FOX wants to do a remake for the 2014-15 season, so that right there is another similarity to The Killing.

I'm watching it, too. It's a challenge for me to get all the dialogue, but, like Paul said, I'm getting the gist of it. I have an idea of who the murderer is. Oh, lord!

I don't have any problem with the dialogue, but I have to turn the volume up, because old-ass me can't always hear when the two leads are mumbling to themselves.

I have an idea of who moved the body to the beach, and by extension, who the killer is, and, if I'm right, it will definitely be a "Holy crap!" moment.

This is why we have CC on all the time!

There's background music, or someone's talking quietly, or the show--or the channel--futzes around with the volume. Very helpful when any of that is going on.

I just rewatched last week's episode. Lots of stuff going on, but they sure are pointing to one particular suspect:

They are making it look like Tom Miller, DS Miller's son and Danny's (former) best friend. Why else would he have Danny's phone? Why is he trying to destroy his computer? This could be another one of their fake leads, but this one really makes sense.

List your theories.

Okay. I was wrong. But not too far off. Unless...

Edited to add: all right. I was wrong.

Ick.

I was avoiding this thread because I didn't want to accidentally get spoiled (since it already aired on ITV). I'll have a few general comments and then spoiler tags.

First off, I really like the music. It's simple, but it does a really good job of setting the mood. This is a mystery, but it's a character piece first and foremost. I really appreciated it. Second, I really liked the characters. I knew it would break my heart whoever it was simply because you got to know everybody really well. Everyone has a story. They're well-rounded characters. You really get a sense of how this tragedy affects them. It's also really well acted. I was impressed through and through.

OK, spoiler tags:
Poor Ellie. :(

Seriously, that's rough. She's certainly my favorite character and you just feel how bad it is for her. You just wanted her to be welcomed back, but I know it wouldn't be realistic.

In retrospect, it all fits, but they certainly didn't give you all the pieces (I actually had Joe and Nige Carter mixed up at one point when he was arrested, so it's not strange to think someone else could confuse them). After last week's episode, I tried to think of potential suspects they hadn't really played up much. I realized Joe fit that criteria perfectly. I tried to think of reasons that couldn't be the case. Sad that it didn't work out that way.

Anyway. Great show. It was fun watching it. I'm curious to see how they can do a second Series.

So, without giving much away, I'm having mixed feelings now that I know the outcome...

On a positive note, the acting, the atmosphere, the music and the pacing were spot on for me... I've been rivited to the TV watching each episode, trying to piece it all together... It has really been fantastic television...

But now that I've had a chance to let it sink in, the reveal, IMHO, seems to be a bit of a cop out... For all the detective work, investigating, interrogating, chases and such, for the killer to be "caught" like that was just a let down... The police were kind of getting close, so I can see how the pressure was getting to the killer, but for them not to have truly solved the mystery was not so great an ending...

One thing that irritates me: the last scene between Beth and Ellie.
Beth is in horrible pain over the death of her son and Ellie is feeling horrible and humiliated that her own husband was the murderer.

Ellie should have told Beth that she was very sorry.

For Beth to have said "in your own house, how could you not know?" echoing what Ellie said to Susan Wright. Well, Beth, how did you not know that your 11 year old son was sneaking out all the time? Not only was Danny spending hours at a time after bedtime with the neighbor and father of his friend, he was visiting his sister's boyfriend's farm with his dad's employee during waking hours. Didn't she ever check up on the kids?!

Yes, someone should tell the grieving mother all that.

ETA: It just aired. Any chance you could place that in spoilers to be courteous to those who may have not seen it yet?
