The Prime Alternative

I think it´s inevitable to ask at this stage:
The D-7 and the Romulan BOP (and/or other ships) will be the next steps in this project ? If so, I´ll be anxiouslly waiting for news. :techman:

We don't have any plans for that yet, but I would love to update them too, one day. We've got to get this model finished first though. :D

Any chance at a resin mini of this Enterprise and Shuttle? :)

Not sure how many we'll end up making, but we're planning to have 2 little scale shuttles in the models shuttlebay, which is going to be pretty cool.

In the next year or so, I really hope to be able to buy a MakerBot 2 3D printer, so I could print out all kinds of smaller scale models. I'd really like a 10" version of our Enterprise for my desk. :)

Thanks guys,

-Ricky

I have been in constant contact with Rick over this model since I posted about it on my blog and I thought it was so much better than JJ verse ship, a much better bridge between the TOS and Refit versions.

Hey Darren... I just found this post from Sunday :)
Thanks for all your kind words about our design enhancements to "our" beloved TOSE; and your great post about the project on your site!

Seems to me if the idea is to say that the Prime Alternative is what the TOS Enterprise would have really looked like in a universe freed from the constraints of 1960's TV production (and a ship one could easily see becoming the TMP version with just a few upgrades), then the Klingon D-7 would pretty much remain the K'Tinga-class from the films (which was just the same ship with a lot more surface detail anyway).

The Romulan BOP....now that's a good question. The TOS version of the BOP doesn't really look much like anything that came from Romulus before or since - Enterprise's version actually comes off as a better predecessor to the TNG Warbird. And it doesn't help that we never saw a TMP version of a Romulan vessel. I'd be very interested to see you tackle that one next, Rick.

Yep! :) ...agree with you 100%; on what "our" Klingon ship should look like in this Prime Alternative Verse...

And, as luck would have it, my PA design partner, Ricky <MadMan1701A> Wallace, had already designed and built his own Klingon Warbird; to do battle with Our Enterprise!

Ricky said, "he based his design on the Klingon "Warbird" that was seen in the Kobyashi Maru test in the 2009 film.. with a merging of style cues from images available in the book "Star Trek: and The Art of the Film"

see Ricky's Orthos for his Klingon "Warbird" here

I think Ricky's "Warbird" is an Awesome Design; and it really works as a perfect match with Our Prime Alternative Enterprise :) ...what do you think?

As for your question about a Romulan BOP;
I agree with you on your statement that...
"the TOS version BOP doesn't really look much like anything that came from Romulus before or since... Enterprise's version actually comes-off as a better predecessor to the TNG Warbird. And it doesn't help that we never saw a TMP version of a Romulan vessel"

Ricky and I had discussed at length a PA version of A Romulan BoP back in 2011; and we have a bunch of design drafts & notes for our "Balance of Terror" ship; which I think could turn out really well...So, after getting your post this morning, I pulled them up and started getting excited about it again... so, maybe I can convince Ricky to build this one next! :)

i know you probably have a reason, but the square windows on the right rear saucer look like you forgot to put rounded ones in and kind of spoils the balance. other than that, pretty cool!!

^It's intentionally mirroring the same feature on the TMP Enterprise.

Forward from page 4:

Yep, the ones on the right side are similar to the Recreation Deck windows on the Refit Enterprise, like you can see in this shot:

And > http://franksavage918.wordpress.com/2009/07/18/1701-tmp-directors-cut/

We both felt that the window placement on the original Enterprise should probably have always looked they way they did on the Refit, so that's what we did with ours.

Wow. Great artwork, there. Very cool.

The only thing I'd add is something that bugs me with every incarnation of the original 1701, including the original model and remastered TOS: the ship doesn't look huge. TMP Enterprise's paneling helped sell that illusion, and I think it's not quite apparent enough on this model.

Otherwise, very impressive. :)

Thanks Belz....we very much appreciate all the kind words :)
But, I disagree with you on the paneling on our ship...
(as we had the same thoughts and concerns in regards to the original TOSE and the TOS-R Enterprise hull plating and panel lines) --

I think Ricky did a Fantastic job with our TPA hull paneling, throughout the entire ship!...which, we feel, really increases our ship's scale and gravitas; while, at the same, remaining a "possible predecessor design” to Andrew Probert’s more refiened Aztec Pattern design on the TMP Refit’s primary hull.

Do you really think we missed the mark on this?

Very nice work guys. Would love to see this beauty integrated into the original series.

One detail that struck me when junxon mentioned the windows on the saucer was the extra gangway hatch on the starboard side of the saucer. The original filming model only had a hatch on the port side, but for some reason the CG model used in the director's cut of the film had a duplicate hatch on the starboard, like yours does.

I guess I was just wondering if you deliberately emulated the direcor's cut version, or maybe were unaware of the hatch not being there on the original? I ask because I've seen this a lot on fan models of the refit Enterprise and other ships from that period.

Interesting... I've always thought that the gangway hatch was on both sides! I definitely used the CG version from the director's cut as reference as far as window placement and everything. I kind of figured that it made sense for them to be able to pull in and dock from either side. :)

I used to have the Mr Scott's Guide when I was a kid, and loved looking at those blueprints. I wonder if they show a hatch on both sides?

-Ricky

I'm not sure about Mr. Scott's guide, I only realized when I was looking at the pictures of the model that were taken during the Christie's auction.

Here's one photo I found.

As a matter of fact, I have a "Star Trek Blueprint Collection" that I got years ago with simple blueprints of the Enterprise A, Enterprise D, and DS9, which has the same hatch shown on the starboard side. According to the copyright, they were published in 1994, so obviously people have been thinking it was there long before the Director's cut came out.

It's just people naturally assuming that all the features are going to be mirrored along the centerline, even though a little research will show otherwise. I've seen other people put in a door on the starboard side of the Galileo shuttlecraft as well.

It's funny, I noticed early on that the gangway hatch was only on the one side. I just assumed all the Federation ships were like that.

FYI :)- Eden FX 2005 model of the Defiant, STAR TREK:ENTERPRISE “IN A MIRROR, DARKLY…” featured No Gangway hatches at all on either side of the Saucer, like the TOSE.

But, as Ricky pointed out above; "we definitely used the CG version from the TMP director's cut as reference as far as window placement and everything. I kind of figured that it made sense for them to be able to pull in and dock from either side". :)
