Thanks for screwing Star Trek, CBS...

I say sell it to a cable company. Starz, HBO, Showtime. They have money and won't cheap out like CBS.

Has HBO done a sci-fi series? Star Trek and HBO just doesn't seem.....right.

HBO has shown they can do big budget epic fantasy with "Game of Thrones", but I'm not sure they would be interested in something like Star Trek...

Maybe a series that's 12 to 15 episodes per season. HBO knows how to make money and wouldn't shy away from it in talks with Paramount for films and Bad Robot the prodcution company. CBS is trying to get away with nickle and diming the franchise.

I was wondering why there were no toys/merchandise for Into Darkness like there was for ST 2009. Now i know and im disappointed.

Yep. It saddens me, too. Thanks to CBS, that's why the 2009 movie toys are expensive as hell. I wanted a 2009 Trek movie toy phaser, but even on Amazon.com they're $40.

HBO had a greater interest in genre stuff in the early 90s, but I'd be more concerned with how they freak over budgets and then just pull the plug. CARNIVALE and DEADWOOD are two of the best series of this century, and both were killed in mid-stride.

HBO even lied about agreeing to a DEADWOOD continuation/wrapup movie, stalling on it endlessly until their lease on the location property could run out and the town would be destroyed, eliminating any possibility of further anything DEADWOOD.

With as much bad press as AMC gets for how it treats its series, HBO has probably been just as vile at times.

Surprise, surprise, Star Trek is popular again and CBS wants it all.

Two companies trying to own and manage a franchise like Star Trek was never going to work out well.

As long as CBS owns the Star Trek property, any television series on premium cable to bear the brand name will be on Showtime -- a subsidiary of CBS -- not HBO.

A couple of months ago I wondered why CBS and Paramount weren't launching Trek as a transmedia franchise -- which, considering the make-up of the fan base, would seem like a no-brainer. I should have guessed it was corporate infighting.

I imagine CBS will re-evaluate this position in the near future, although it may not occur until after the end of the Bad Robot movie series, whenever that happens to be. (Eventually, as Dennis points out, they have to re-evaluate their position, or just put the franchise to bed, since most of their fanbase for the original series is aging rapidly.)

The reality of the situation is that Trek '09 didn't pull in worldwide numbers like they were expecting and the franchise doesn't justify an extensive roll out of merchandise at this time. Unless Darkness sees a serious uptick in sales from the first, there might be an even more serious reassessing of nuTrek's future.

And Disney certainly isn't the answer. They hemmed and hawed for two years over another Tron sequel because they were underwhelmed with the box office... and Legacy actually made more than Trek '09.

This year's Fast & Furious 6 might clear double what Darkness does, and next year's Transformers 4 will triple it. Now those are numbers studios want out of their franchises.

I don't think Star Trek (2009) brought in anything less than expected on the international front for Paramount. The franchise has always made about twice as much domestically as it has overseas. The studio knew this was Star Trek's weakness, which is why they've rolled out Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) in so many overseas markets before the US, and given the film a big advertising push there.

You're not missing much -- they were crappy as hell. Not even worth the $15 they originally cost. (There's a reason the toys sold like shit originally.)

I think I have a spare knocking around in a box somewhere if you really want one, though. I don't know what condition it's in but I'd be happy to send it to you.

Unfortunately the guy from DEXTER will probably be too old to play Kirk in that version of TREK, should it come to pass.

At Goodwill you can't even get people to spend $1.99 for them. Sometimes you'll see a big sealed baggie with 4 or 5 of those garden hose nozzle rayguns inside for a buck or two. (the old model kits are still popular though.)

Aw, that is so sweet of you. :adore:

They were shockingly cheap. I remember I traveled out of town to the only local Target where I was living at the time in order to pick some up; I even got a sales clerk to put a set aside for me ahead of time I was so pumped. Got home, opened the phaser, tric and communicator and instantly felt ripped off.

Alright. Let me dig through my boxes and see what I've got.

And if you need anything pony related...

Sure. Complete creative control of the franchise so I can undo the horrible damage McCarthy, Vogel and presumably Goldner are wreaking, please.
