How the Battle Over 'Star Trek' Rights Killed J.J. Abrams' Grand Ambitions

A struggle over the U.S.S. Enterprise's past and future helped sour J.J. Abrams on the "Star Trek" franchise and may have contributed to his decision to take on the "Star Wars" universe.

Competing ambitions between Paramount, CBS and Abrams' production company Bad Robot over merchandising surrounding the first film in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise led the director to curtail plans to turn the series into a multi-platform experience that spanned television, digital entertainment and comic books, according to an individual with knowledge of the dispute.

"J.J. just threw up his hands," the individual told TheWrap. "The message was, 'Why set up all this when we'll just be competing against ourselves?' The studio wanted to please Bad Robot, but it was allowing CBS to say yay or nay when it came to what was happening with the 'Star Trek' products."

Penny wise and pound foolish.

How many more years do those dingbats think they can hawk tchotchkes with Shatner's mug on them to the tune of 20 million dollars a year? Contrary to the notion some folks have that TOS Is Forever, the generation that makes up the dependable core group of consumers for that stuff is dwindling...and beginning to die.

If a business like that doesn't adjust to a changing market, grow and take some chances on future products their competitors eat their lunch.

I guarantee you that a certain number of idiots will read this whole thing as "That arrogant SOB Jar Jar Abrams wants to take away my right to buy Leonard Nimoy pajamas! Wah!"

And then, however irrationally, at some point Rick Berman's name will be dragged into it.

As much as I enjoy the TNG remasters, they really need to just let go and give the reigns to someone else. I mean, why not sell the video game license to some studios to do what they wish like Disney have done with SW? Just one example.

Agreed. It's also frustrating because people like me are ready and willing to buy NuTrek merchandise, but the money's right there and it's almost like CBS is afraid of it.

Shit, it's like Hasbro.

This really wouldn't limit the continuing sales of home video, anyway.

Wow seriously? Maybe this confirms Rick Berman's admissions about how things were handed down from the studio to him and he either had to comply or be fired.

I mean WTF though? It's money in your pocket the more merchandise you put out there. You have to strike while the iron is hot if you want to make a profit. Takes money to make money but CBS seems like they are trying to nickle and dime the franchise again. Maybe if STID makes over half a billion worldwide they'll reconsider.

The horse has left the barn. This story makes it pretty clear that while Bad Robot may continue to oversee the Star Trek movies for some time, Abrams's own interest has quite reasonably moved on to a greater opportunity with more forward-thinking partners.

Just imagine if they had started a new series that began after the most recent movie. It would have been perfect.

So, that's it? Almost ten years of waiting and we're done?

EDIT: And then there's this:

"Bullcrap! The only ones who are interested in this lame laughable garbage are the Dreckies. Real Trekkies have been avoiding this monstrosity like the plague.
No one is 'against change' contrary to some of the popular prattle some losers are claiming. But there was NO NEED to reboot star Trek. That was such a lie! The Original Series is a hundred times better this laughable crap. Who cares about special effects?! Smart People care MORE about story then special effects. Only the most superficial individuals care so much about them. RME
Special Effects should enhance the story not BE center stage.
The characters are a joke! they are 1 dimensional jerks who are painful to watch.
And NO! Gene did NOT want any stinking REBOOT! that is such a lie! I have that interview some scumbags have been using as 'proof' that he would have approved of this laughable shallow garbage. He CALLED STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION A REBOOT! So he really meant 'Spin-Off' NOT Reboot! Poor Gene is probably spinning in his grave over this farce!
Those babbling about how great Abrams is, are OBVIOUSLY NOT Real Trekkies AND they MOST LIKELY work for him!
I'M ECSTATIC that this psychotic fraudulent crap is being destroyed AND GOOD RIDDANCE!
Now maybe A REAL STAR TREK WRITER can be hired who can write both INTELLIGENT stories that are both smart as well as entertaining. Something Abrams obviously cannot do!
And anyone who does not know who the original actors are who played these roles (VASTLY SUPERIOR TO THESE VAPID HALF-WITS) can STFU! Their opinion is a worthless joke! No Trekkie gives a crap about those Drekkies opinion.
And sadly I see this page littered with numerous Dreckies! And all of them are a joke!
Gene Roddenberry's original show is a thousand times superior to this mind-numbing crap!
Hopefully Paramount will dump Abrams and hire someone who actually LOVES STAR TREK! There are millions of stories left in the old series (all of them. Except maybe Enterprise) and only a complete imbecile would fail to grasp this FACT!"

Cue someone bleating "That's fine. I'd rather have no Star Trek on TV at all than something cooked up by Abrams and those Transformers writers of his!"

CBS remastered TNG, when any other company would have been ran away because of the costs. They obviously still consider Trek an important property.

More nuTrek items for us to purchase would be great, but for some reason they don't think it is important right now. We should be glad we have the movies.

"Stable" is not the first word I would use to describe this person.
