Actually, people did talk about it when the clip was released. And by then it was known there was a Khan shout scene.

I wonder why Kirk in TWOK didn't scream KHAAAAAN a second time when Spock died. Oh right, because it would have been over the top, and not a believable emotional reaction, and would have ruined the death scene.

Two days after seeing Into Darkness I'm feeling even more mad at JJ. I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm thinking that one scene has toppled TATV from it's pinnacle on my (very small) hate pile.

 

I'm not sure why Spock blamed Khan. It was Admiral Marcus' who crippled the Enterprise, it was his plan that got them into that situation. Or have I forgotten something?

 

It was illogical of Spock. Thry've only been together for a year or so too, so no scope for the "I have been and always shall be your friend" that made the original so poignant.

 

If anyone was going to be all mushy about friendship after one year it would be Kirk because he went on that roller coaster mind meld of Kirk and Spock friendship inside Prime Spock's head.

 

I don't know, I got the impression that K+S were very good friends in Into Darkness. Plus, Spock has lot a LOT of people in his life.

I had a tear in my eye when Kirk said, "Because I'm your friend."

 

I actually thought it was going to dive into K/S territory for moment there.

I was thinking.. "COULD JJ ACTUALLY DO IT?!""

Shortly after I was thinking about slapping JJ senseless so it was quite a ride.

Really? That must have been in the spoiler thread. I'm glad I had the strength to stay away from it, so I could have at least some surprises.

I just don't get it. Should he have screamed, "Noooooooo!" instead? Maybe he should've said, "Khan, you bastard! You've killed my captain!"

If he just slumps down in a heap like Kirk did in TWOK, then how does that transition to him going emotionally batshit to find Khan and beat him senseless? This moment played perfectly into the volcano of rage and emotion that's just under Spock's surface every day of the week. It's no different than smiling and yelling, "Jim!" when he found Kirk was actually alive at the end of "Amok Time". The emotions are always there, and in unguarded moments, they come out in torrents.

Granted the writers invited comparison by so blatantly borrowing from the two moments in TWOK. But in a movie that requires suspension of disbelief in the first place, is keeping the two separate really that hard? Forget TWOK and give it a chance on its own merits. If it doesn't work for folks on its own merits, fine.

There's also a far more subtle homage to TSFS in the subsequent events -- forshadowed by McCoy's remark to Kirk during the volcano scene. In TSFS, Spock says to Kirk that his father told him they came back for him. "You would have done the same for me," Kirk replies. In STID, Spock essentially does by going after Khan. It's not logical, Khan could create a lot more destruction in the pursuit and more people could die, but in this case, the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.

Do you really want to go with that? Exactly how long does a friendship have to last before there's "scope" and poignancy in expressing great emotion at losing a friend?

 

BINGO! Honestly I think a lot of people are still in the closet and just don't want to openly admit that they hate some of these things because some people in Hollywood had the gull to recast their hero and retcon some of their favorite memories all while being more popular and successful films.

Someday the people might not talk about WOK anymore and might talk about STiD instead and they are mad/butthurt.

Having not seen the movie yet, it certainly sounds like they managed to include an iconic line and use it with a real character reason for it.

The original is mocked mainly for Shatner's face. But for me it always seemed out of context (unless Admiral Kirk was a D-Bag). Khan didn't fall for Kirk dogging him and then Montalban delivered a killer line and Kirk yelled at him........for.....not accepting his challenge?

Either that or Kirk new all along he had an escape plan and just wanted to make Khan think he was really enraged so as to not show his hand, and in that way he was faking it and it came off as goofy.

Either way Kirk didn't really seem to have a good reason to be so mad, in this movie Spock does and it appears to fit perfectly with his established character up to this point.

 

Are we forgetting that kirk and Spock will still at each other for the 2nd movie as well and Spock did say that when he mind meld with pike he felt his pain and suffering and his fear the same feeling he got when he lost world and would never want to feel them emotions again. So how I see it when he loses his friend kirk it brings his emotions up to the surface. I would of liked to have seen pike saving kirk and Spock and not getting killed. And getting him more seriously injured.

I do like the 5 year mission kirk and the crew are now on !!! So much has happend to kirk and crew before there 5 year mission !!

 

This one had more context than the first time. I also liked it.

Instead he beat the holy living crap out of Kirk and behaved completely irrationally when he THREW Kirk off the ship.

Ya know, onto the frozen Hell with the Ice Gorilla and that red thing?

 

But Khan was still alive and Marcus was not.

And it was Marcus' fault but if Khan had stuck to the agreement Kirk need not have sacrificed himself

 

I went to see it last night, the cinema was crowded, and everyone was as silent as a grave during that scene. In all honesty, I think most people who go in to see this don't even know TWOK, or aren't as attached to Trek lore (and iconic quotes) as we are. The people I went to the cinema with were sort of aware of Khan, but had no idea that this scene was taken right out of an older version of the story.

I like it when NuSpock flips his shit when something awful happens.

And I do agree, people have the strangest complaints. It was one line. It's easy to ignore if you don't like it.
