We petition the Obama Administration to:

I still think this is one of the silliest petitions ever. If any space program deserves funding it would be the 100 Year Starship Initiative.

With a Dyson Sphere, there would be no night sky.
Which would make me that weirdo living on the 'wrong' side of the shell

This whole thing is silly. Besides the cost of it. Why build something when we are yet to get out of our solar system. Building and researching the spaceships and fuel sources are more important.

And even if you could build it, wtf would you do with it? What planet would you feel the need to blow up at some point, since we can't get out of the system? It's not like you could turn the superlaser on, say, Iran and just blow up Iran. "Silly" is putting it mildly.

Actually, people living on the outside of a Dyson Sphere is a nice idea for a story.

So, erhm, this civilization builds a Dyson-sphere around their sun and spend the next couple of million years filing it in with their kind.

Meanwhile a whole new civilization spawns from bacteria on the outside...

Which civilization will be victorious in The War of the Dyson Sphere?

-Just a thought.

^^ Nobody knows the trouble I've seen.

I was thinking more of a non-civilization of loners and non-conformists, but there certainly could be an eventual conflict-- especially if any of them fall through the roof. :rommie:

If they could just blow up individual starships in RoTJ, then I'm sure we can just blow up Iran or Canada or something.

Plus think of all the surface area we could sell ad space on. Financial Crisis solved.

We should've elected Newt Gingrich. He wants a moonbase after all, if anyone would've gotten behind this, it would be him. :p

Here's the response from The White House. Link: This Isn't the Petition Response You're Looking For

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
The Administration does not support blowing up planets.
Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

However, look carefully (here's how) and you'll notice something already floating in the sky -- that's no Moon, it's a Space Station! Yes, we already have a giant, football field-sized International Space Station in orbit around the Earth that's helping us learn how humans can live and thrive in space for long durations. The Space Station has six astronauts -- American, Russian, and Canadian -- living in it right now, conducting research, learning how to live and work in space over long periods of time, routinely welcoming visiting spacecraft and repairing onboard garbage mashers, etc. We've also got two robot science labs -- one wielding a laser -- roving around Mars, looking at whether life ever existed on the Red Planet...

The nerd is strong in this Administration.
