We petition the Obama Administration to:

We currently can't even manage low earth orbit without hitching a ride. Better start small with a Star Destroyer or something.
Remember, everything has to fit through the hatch of a Soyuz.

This is the annoying side effect of democracy.
The sooner the petition gets nearly a million signatures,
the sooner President Obama can completely ignore it.

Guys. Guys. Did you ever see Star Wars? You just send a torpedo through the design-flaw hatch and the whole thing's destroyed. Not an efficient use of resources or time.

Well, seeing as how whitehouse.gov petitions are legally binding an all, why settle for a Death Star? Lets build a fucking Dyson Sphere! Why fuck around with little shit when we don't have to?

This whole thing is silly. Besides the cost of it. Why build something when we are yet to get out of our solar system. Building and researching the spaceships and fuel sources are more important.

I say we petition President Obama to disregard all petitions.

Just to see what would happen.

True we don't use it to suck up stray asteroids as much as they used to in the olden days, but it's still very pretty and a nice thing to be able to catch a glimpse of in the night sky.

So, you'd rather have the pretty sight of Jupiter in the night sky than clean energy for the rest of human civilization? As long as you got your priorities straight ...

^It's not necessary to dismantle the solar system in order to harvest solar energy... there should be enough material in the asteroid belt to build vast structures in space (and since asteroids are a hazard to both space travel and habitats (such as the Earth) within the system, I see only very little environmental damage done by using the matter from those).

^No, we're going to need it all. I'll settle for nothing less than a full Dyson Shell, none of this pansy Dyson Ring or Dyson Cloud bullshit. I know! The petition will be worded so that there's enough asteroids in the solar system to complete the project, and also to change some laws of physics that would make such a project problematic.

Although, the main reason I want a Dyson Sphere, aside from it being awesome, is that the aliens won't be able to just abduct and probe people whenever they want. They'd have to make an appointment and wait for us to open the hatch. Maybe it would be easier to start a petition that would prevent he aliens from abducting people? Or, at the very least, when they abduct people, to not have such cold hands.

^You're assuming that the aliens won't simply punch holes in our Dyson Sphere by tossing planets at it, like rednecks shooting at road signs.

While I love my cave-like flat I wouldn't like to live on (in?) a world that has no night or any stars in the sky -I'm not that much of a cave-dweller

For me the big O is (would be?) a nice place to live :)

Oh, while some of us do have cold hands, others have seen Star Wars and are adapting technology from that to do the probing...

With a Dyson Sphere, there would be no night sky. I'm kidding, of course. I wouldn't want to dismantle the Solar System. There are plenty of other ways to harvest solar energy. We could just dismantle Texas.

Okay, we're making progress here. If only Congress could get along so well.
