I always try and go into a movie with a positive attitude.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is something that many fans says was dull because it didn't have any action. This movie will have some action and like the last one it will hopefull be balanced with good character development.

@ RAMA ^Yeah, I know that the comics are part of the continuity. But that's not the same as setting up a major part of the movie's plot and arc in the comic. It's purely for completists. Expecting an audience to be familiar with these events is just not part of their plan, IMHO.

It's a kick trying to pick out who read the last 7 pages and who didn't. Usually you can tell by those saying "Khan!" or "Garth!" as if nobody thought of it yet. :-)

Looks like a fun action flick. I'm enjoying the obvious misdirection the producers give fans a reason to tune in while mainstream audiences are drooling over the standard Trailer blackouts, the pretty 'splosions and heavy bass music. Odds are, a ton of us will be surprised on day one. I don't think Alice Eve looks like Dehner all that much, but that doesn't mean anything. I find her miles prettier, actually, but that's just me. Sally Kellerman was gorgeous in her youth, but Alice Eve can have my entire fortune just by looking at me nicely.

As for a Star Trek Trailer "never being this exciting" I disagree. I found the full trailer for TUC to be much more exciting and just as action packed. AND it all made senseā€¦. As a trailer, that was tops. This one feels like Iron Man 3 or Skyfall. Lots of random shots cut together to show off the big effects and action beats. However, it IS just a teaser.

Great trailer. Definitely does its job of making me want to see more.

My theory is that Cumberbatch plays Cyrano Jones. In this timeline he stayed away from the Big Macs and hit the gym hard, to take his revenge on the Klingons for wiping out the Tribble homeworld (his family) and the Federation for... not buying more of them, I guess.

Lenore Karidian from The Conscious of the King comes immediately to mind.

Very nice. The film definitely says "summer blockbuster" and not "Star Trek", but if this is just the teaser trailer (and another, longer trailer is still forthcoming) then I think it's very effective. Paramount isn't marketing this film to Trek fans. They already know that the fans are going to see the movie, anyway. This trailer is supposed to entice the casual fans, the fans of ST'09, and the general public who don't watch Trek.

So I read through the next 7 pages of this thread this morning and I'm being asked what I wanted to see for a Trek film and why this doesn't feel like Star Trek to me. Well, part of it is this film feels like 100 trailers we've seen so many times in the last few years with the booming music, explosions, and that Battle: LA tone. I mean seriously, how many times have we seen trailers like this, where you get the whole "Boom" (Dialoge) "Boom" (More dialog and even extra special effects), and then add more "Booms" for good measure.

Because I feel like I've seen this trailer 100's of times, it lacks heart. If there was one thing Star Trek has always prided itself on, it's heart. It's being able to make me think about it for days on in after I watch it. With this trailer, yeah today is an exciting day because we get are first glimpse into the new movie, but ask me how I feel about it a week from now and I'll probably be like "Oh, that trailer? It was ok, I guess".

Now granted it is only a teaser, and they are trying to get the mainstream fan into this movie, but I almost get the sense of either/or, and that's why I'm getting a "Star Trek in Name Only". They attach Star Trek to a generic teaser that we've seen 100s of times pandering to the mainstream audience and wanting to get the fans just because it's called "Star Trek".

Maybe I'm just tired of the whole vengeance theme and all the "kool 'splosions" I mean there wasn't even any space travel in this teaser, and it looks like most of the movie is taking place on or near earth.

As for Star Trek changing, I'm fine with Star Trek changing, as long as it knows where it came from and where it decides to go. I don't want to see Star Trek just be a "generic" thriller just to excite the masses. It's a lot more than that, and has 50 years of history to back that up.

Again, with all this being said, this was just a teaser. Hopefully the next few trailers will make me feel like this is a worthy Star Trek movie and we still have 6 months to go before the release date. A lot can happen in those 6 months. Hell, I remember the last teaser to trailer for Star Trek (2009) and the two were really different. I expect something similar to happen here.

It's a teaser trailer, it has 60 seconds to show something, anything from something 2 hours long that makes people want to watch it. And it's succeded.

Sigh* I have been a fan of Star Trek since 1973 and I am a bit tired of the "this is not Star trek" crowd.

For me Trek09 brought back the thrill and amazement I had when I became a fan that many years ago.

This feels like Star Trek to me.

Reading this takes longer than watching the teaser.
Life is to precious, the teaser is to good (those marketing people really know what they are doing) to waste time on your "Star Trek is supposed to be..." drivel.
