My work is still closed, and will be again tomorrow. It's in the Flatiron District and still has no power. Today I waled to Manhattan and around the LES a bit. Manhattan without power is eerie, and I haven't seen the East Village so empty since September 11th. At the same time, I have been walking over the Williamsburg Bridge almost every day for about 6 years and I've never seen it so crowded. What a strange several days it has been, and I'm so grateful, after walking around the city in the cold for the past 6 hours, to be able to come home to a warm and lighted home.
Also, Cowboy Bebop is awesome, Smoothie, if you haven't watched it, you should! The music is really amazing, and each episode has a musical theme (ballads one ep, blues, jazz, etc). Watch through episode 5, and if you're not hooked, you're nuts. I'd recommend watching in the original Japanese with subtitles, but if you must, the dub isn't bad.

I finally shot a Facebook PM to one of my cousins in New Jersey. There had been no peep of her or either of her sisters on Facebook since early last weekend. They aren't that active on Facebook though.
I'm sure they are okay though. I know my uncle (their dad) live well inland (closer to the Delaware river) so uncle and aunt should be just fine. But two of my cousins live right in the NYC area.

Phew ... just got power and services back here in northern Queens ... 'twas a wild ride here and I was almost completely out of the loop in terms of news. I had a radio that lasted for a bit, but the visuals I'm seeing now are far more dramatic than the newscasters on the radio. By all accounts, I made out very well. Here's to those affected more severely than me ... just ... wow ...
Yeah, it's such a mess out there. Anything I have to complain about is exceedingly trivial by comparison. There are a lot of people still without power, and a bunch who have really lost everything.
Indeed ... Cell phone connections were spotty at best over the past few days. I finally got a hold of my mom in upstate NY to let her know I was okay. Her first comment was to tell me about a "massive fire in Queens" and that she was worried that it was me ... I asked her where in Queens the fire was, but being the upstate-er that she is, she didn't bother taking note that she was looking at Breezy Point.
I just finally saw a photo of what the fire did. And ... wow ... just wow ... and then there's Long Island ... Staten Island ... Lower Manhattan ... New Jersey ... when I look around at the houses and cars here with trees collapsed onto them and realize that we made out better than most?

Yeah, the fire in Breezy Point looked like an inferno. I was marvelling that the people trapped inside got out ok, thanks to the firefighters rescuing them.
The thing is, I used to live in Marine Park, Brooklyn, just a couple of miles (as the crow flies) from Breezy Point. I know people who live (and have family) there. Thankfully (for me, at least) no one I know was affected. But for the people who were ...
If I am going to watch something weird and subtitled, it's Numa Numa FTW.
Cowboy Bebop's not actually weird. It's a coherent sci-fi story about future bounty hunters in space with ties to the mafia.
If you want weird anime you should watch FLCL (pronounced Foodee coodee), which is about a boy from whose head springs agressive giant robots and a chick who rides a Vespa and fights the evil robots with an electric guitar. It also has great music.

Can't get a hold of some family friends in Staten Island. I hope that just means the power is still gone and nothing worse.

Yeah, it's a real shame she couldn't prepare herself for being on camera better, what with the power outages, high winds, rainfall, and all the stores being closed. She really let herself go in the middle of this massive disaster.
Her face was actually fine. It was her wrinkled neck that was really telling, very 60's like... and not much you can do about that with makeup.
Thanks for posting that. The really telling point is at 1 minute in, when you see all the lights suddenly go out...
