Northeast Frankenstorm, hurricane Sandy.

Here in Westbury, Long Island we were without power since yesterday and got it restored earlier this afternoon. However most of the complex is without power still. We're one of the four building with power in a 24 building complex. So we feel real fortunate right now. Earlier today walked around the complex and thankfully there was only minor damage, roof tiles blown off and trees uprooted.

One of the deaths in New Jersey happen in my home town of Hawthorne. In fact I know the family real well, My heart goes out to them.

So, my friend in Moonachie that I'd heard was okay? She was, as of last night--which is the last time anyone heard from her. No one's sure what's happening now. No one can seem to reach her. :(

Hopefully, her phone just got wet or something and she's not been able to get to another phone or computer. I am just worried. Her boss is going to check on her in the morning.

I hope everything is okay. I'm sure it is since she made it out of the initial flooding. Probably just a phone or computer issue like you said.

Wow... Nana is really showing her age in that shot. Even in the last days of DS9 in 1999, she looked really good. That's just 13 years ago. I guess stage makeup was hiding things well. Anyway, she still looks good, just expected her to look younger.

Yeah, it's a real shame she couldn't prepare herself for being on camera better, what with the power outages, high winds, rainfall, and all the stores being closed. She really let herself go in the middle of this massive disaster.

I'd give her a thumbs sideways. :borg:

The effects of the storm apparently reached Chicago

You'd need to scroll through the pictures a bit, but there's a picture of a guy taking pictures, with wild waves in the Chicago harbor.

I'm on the other side of Illinois, but it has been extremely windy here the last couple days. No idea if it has anything to do with the hurricane or not.

It does. You can expect at least one more day of wind, probably with some rainfall (or snow, depending on the temperature -- in addition to flooding New York and New Jersey, Sandy dropped 26 inches of snow on western Maryland and West Virginia).

I saw this on my way to work this morning:

Power up and down my street is out, except for my building. Lots of closed roads due to downed trees/utility poles. Everyone's making runs on the gas stations that are open, too.

I hope you've gotten good news by now. I'm still waiting for a couple cousins in Westchester and Bergen Counties to check in.

Between the conditions she's under in the city, the rain, lack of power. Her not being covered in makeup, and her being in her mid-50s I don't think Nana looks that bad.

 Wow, guys, how gorgeous do you look in the midst of a huge storm?

My mother's dog is named after your av. Of course my dog is named after a Greek Empress, but that is neither here nor there.

Well I'm back to work this morning. My building had the hot water and steam turned off this morning. I assume that is so they can make repairs.

On the plus side my office is actually a comfortable temperature now.

So, are there any news from Atlantic City? Just before the storm hit, they said it was the most badly hit town so far on the news, but since then, I haven't heard anything about it. Was that a fals alarm? Or are people just busy with the places in the state that have been hit harder?

ETA: Ah, nevermind. I just read that Obama will be visiting today. So there will be pictures and reports later on.

Not sure. I heard back from JW, who said:

JonathonWally texted:

We're all ok here

Was able to drive by the house before, everything is undamaged but whole town is flooded from the stacked high tides/ storm surge

90% of long island without power, they're saying 10 days till its back

Roads are real bad so we're staying here for another 3-4 days

Still no word from donkey or my buddy Will. :( I'm hoping it's just because cell phone service is wonky in Brooklyn and Manhattan, or that they're just too busy to respond yet.

Well that's Kreacher in her av, not Dobby.

Close enough. I get stuck watching those movies whenever I visit my mom, who subjects me to way too much Hairy Potter flicks.

Thank you, Zombie Seeker.

Sorry, not close enough, SmoothieX. :p There are only two house elves in the movies. They have totally different personalities and behavior, and they don't look alike. :)

That said... I don't know how often you're at your mother's, but it sounds like too much Harry Potter even for me. My sympathy.

She lives about an hour away and I generally visit her for dinner on Saturday, and then stay the night. I deal with the questionable movies when it is her turn to cook, and sometimes when it is my turn to cook.

She loves football and baseball however, so I can usually coax the dial in that direction.

And Dobby the Corgi, who terrorizes my gentle, snuggly, little Lab.

Not quite that cold yet. It's been in the 30s at night, but during the daytime it's still been around 50 and sunny. Aside from the wind, the weather is actually very pleasant. Perhaps it took a hurricane for us to finally get a legitimate Autumn around here.

Did you miss the part where I said she didn't look that bad given the conditions?
