Australia relocates

At least Austria does reasonable well in the Winter Olympics at least when compared to Australia (even if Australia had one of the coolest win ever in the Winter Olympics).

Perfect to combine the efforts then - North Austrialians for alpine skiiing, ski jumping and ski whateverelsethereis and South Austrialians for rowing, swimming, cycling, etc.

We will have to design a really cool new flag for Austrialia.

Edited to add - actually I don't think Australia would have to invade Austria, the two countries could just amalgamate. I am sure Austrians would love to be able to come to Australia without a visa and enjoy beautiful beaches and sunshine. Some Australians like to ski and ski resorts in Austria are probably better than ski resorts in Australia, and Austria has castles and other cool things.

WTF?? New Zealand is now a town in Australia??

News to me. Oh well, best swap me Speights for me XXXX.

Yes.

Coincidentally (or was it by clever design?), it has the symbols of the American flag practically backwards, which is fitting given how this all started.

There was a bit on TV recently with someone asking random Americans in the street to name European countries.

I would expect it to have been edited for humorous purposes, but it was basically a collection of shrugs, blank expressions and someone saying 'Paris ?'.

On my visits to the US I found that quite a lot of people believe Germany is a province of Bavaria. :D (flattering as that may be, we Bavarians would rather not adopt the Northerners. That'd be a bit like the Welsh and Scottish adopting the English)

My experience is about people mixing up Spanish and Italian ("ah, so you are from Italy? Do you speak Spanish?" "Well, uhm..."), or thinking that all Italians women look like Sophia Loren, and all men look like mafia hitmen.

That's nothing. Here you can get random people on the street to claim Bavaria is a foreign country (and not as a joke, either) even though it's just a state of the country these people live in.

What do you think the result would be if you asked random Europeans to name African countries?

And no, there's no difference, unless you assume Europe is more "important" somehow.

I sure am pleased that Australia got moved into Europe. That move alone will save me a ton of airfare money when we decide to travel there. Did the Australians switch over to the Euro as well?

I'd expect random Europeans to be able to name a few African countries. Besides, it's hardly a similar thing given Americas close historical links to many European countries - i.e. countries of origin.

I agree on the first part. I could easily name dozens of African countries and I'd assume that even random people on the streets here would probably be able to name a few.

But... the second part I don't agree with. Europe has strong historical links to Africa. We just don't like to be reminded of them.

I would hope so... but sometimes I get the feeling that, living in a university city, working in academia, and hanging out with generally well-educated people, we sometimes live in a "happy island", while there are vast expanses of ignorance just outside our field of vision.

Yeah, that's true. Maybe as Italians we feel those ties more strongly, or maybe we just can't ignore them: Italy being as much a Mediterranean country as much as an European one. One time I was talking with a couple of people from the Baltic Countries, and they were shocked to hear that much of Italian (and European) culture comes from North Africa and the Middle East.

I'm sure that you can edit together a similarly shocking video of random Europeans bein ignorant about everything. A lot of people are pretty dumb.
