At least Austria does reasonable well in the Winter Olympics at least when compared to Australia (even if Australia had one of the coolest win ever in the Winter Olympics).

On my visits to the US I found that quite a lot of people believe Germany is a province of Bavaria.![]()
I would expect it to have been edited for humorous purposes, but it was basically a collection of shrugs, blank expressions and someone saying 'Paris ?'.
There was a bit on TV recently with someone asking random Americans in the street to name European countries.

What do you think the result would be if you asked random Europeans to name African countries?
And no, there's no difference, unless you assume Europe is more "important" somehow.
I'd expect random Europeans to be able to name a few African countries. Besides, it's hardly a similar thing given Americas close historical links to many European countries - i.e. countries of origin.
I would hope so... but sometimes I get the feeling that, living in a university city, working in academia, and hanging out with generally well-educated people, we sometimes live in a "happy island", while there are vast expanses of ignorance just outside our field of vision.I agree on the first part. I could easily name dozens of African countries and I'd assume that even random people on the streets here would probably be able to name a few.
Yeah, that's true. Maybe as Italians we feel those ties more strongly, or maybe we just can't ignore them: Italy being as much a Mediterranean country as much as an European one. One time I was talking with a couple of people from the Baltic Countries, and they were shocked to hear that much of Italian (and European) culture comes from North Africa and the Middle East.But... the second part I don't agree with. Europe has strong historical links to Africa. We just don't like to be reminded of them.
