Australia relocates

No matter how bad the geographical knowledge of certain American TV station or newspapers have been I don't think they have reach quite the heights of stupidity as the Daily Mail (UK) did with this map

It seems that Australia has an entirely new state (Capricornia). How does anyone make this kind of mistake?

Here is another one

and wasn't there a map that put Israel in the totally wrong place? Or was it Egypt?

Two things, I guess.

One, there is a region called Capricornia, not the same as a state.

Two, the Xavier Herbert novel of that name which was set in the fictioal state of that name, which, iirc, had Townsville as its capital.

How a quaility news room mixes these things up is a question worth asking.

We will have to design a really cool new flag for Austrialia.

Edited to add - actually I don't think Australia would have to invade Austria, the two countries could just amalgamate. I am sure Austrians would love to be able to come to Australia without a visa and enjoy beautiful beaches and sunshine. Some Australians like to ski and ski resorts in Austria are probably better than ski resorts in Australia, and Austria has castles and other cool things.

Yeah but do we really need more cellar sex slave operators in this country???

:techman::techman:

It's a very easy mistake to make. I lose track of the states all the time. If it's not Victoria, it doesnt matter

How hard is it to remember the names of SIX freakin' states?? We Yanks have fifty of them, you know.

It also means that some people in Asia or so have a very weird perception of Australia by now. ;)
So Hitler wasn't born in Australia after all!

But Einstein was.

Their talking about it on ABC radio right now.

The NBC site has also used a pic of Bear Grylls for one of our hockey players, Jamie Dwyer.

Well, that's just bizarre, I can't even fathom how they managed to do that. Maybe it was a joke? They've corrected it know, though.

You were probably thinking of this, Miss Chicken:

And I might as well add a couple more "gems":

in an age where we discovered that even the universe has its borders, it appears that the only thing that has absolutely no limits is human stupidity

This must be a fake. I suppose this was originally about the guy who murdered those Jewish children and their teacher. The fact that it say "Buddhist madman" really points in that direction. Also, the myriad of errors (from the spelling of the place to the wrong location on the map to the misnameing of the French President).

^Yeah, it's a fake (I've just googled to check). :) Thankfully.

The rest are true, though. I think.
