Underrated Movies

Haven't seen Predators yet - I'd rather they'd actually done Rodriguez's original idea for a 16th Century Preds Vs Pirates...

AvP I think is slightly underrated as well. Not the second one, though...

I don't much care for the AvP movies, but I think the second one is better than the first because of one character: the Wolf Predator. I'm a huge fan of the Predator race and while the mountain townfolk were annoying as hell and I don't buy Steven Pasquale as an action movie star, it was cool seeing the Wolf get called in and clean up this mess being created by the Predalien. At first he starts off calm and collected, but as the movie progresses, especially around the scene at the power station, you can see the Wolf is getting pretty pissed off as the situation unravels completely out of control. He goes from taking precise shots to shooting at everything like a mad man and it just shows that he's having difficulties.

My friend and I were actually discussing at work tonight just how badass the Predators are, and that the only way to take them out is through deceit and treachery. Ah-nuld and Royce both had to resort to using mud to mask their heat signatures and use booby traps to take the Predators down. The only one to win fairly was Danny Glover. And that's one reason why I like Predator 2 so much. It's a completely different movie and Mike Harrigan is a completely different character than Dutch Schaeffer, but he was able to use the Predator's blade to chop his own arm off and then shove the blade into the Predator's gut. And that makes Danny Glover the only true badass to ever take on a Predator. And this is hard for me to admit, being a big Arnie and a big Predator 1 fan.

I'm not sure I get this 'taking a Predator down fairly' business. So Arnold coated himself in mud, the Predator had a freaking cloaking device, and yeah he used booby traps, and the Predator had a laser cannon strapped to his shoulder!

It could be argued as well that the Predator Arnold fought was a vastly experienced hunter, whilst the one Glover went up against was still learning the ropes (hence why one was acting alone and the other was just one of many.)

And as well Glover had the home field advantage because he knew the territory :)

I still like P2, I just don't think it's as good as the first one. I liked Predators a lot, the main flaw with it is that it just isn't quoatable enough! The only line that ever sticks out is the "Five o'clock is raping time," which unfortunately isn't the kind of thing one can trot out in polite company. Predator is insanely quotable. That's the trouble with films these days, not enough one liners...

AVP is a better film than it has any right to be, and the more I think about it no worse than Prometheus on a much smaller budget. AVP2 though...people should have been arrested over that.

Hudson has most of the good lines but my favorite is:

Ripley: Hudson! This little girl survived longer than that with no weapons and no training.
Ripley: Right?
[Newt apes a salute]
Hudson: Why don't you put her in charge?

My favorite quote from Aliens was the dialogue said by Ripley to Carter Burke (Paul Reiser) after Burke is detained by the remaining marines for trying to get Ripley and Newt implanted with the aliens embryos.

Ripley : "You know Burke, I don't know which species is worse ? You don't see them f**king each other over for a God damned percentage."

Predator 2 also has the advantage of having a Bat-Shit-Crazy Gary Busey.

If there's ever a DS9 movie, we have to have Gary Busey as Gowron's revenge-seeking brother!

Well crap all this talk means I'm going to have to rewatch Aliens, been a few years since I saw it. It's in the back of DVD drawer at this point.

I probably should have pulled that set out already and watched Alien pre-Prometheus viewing but I didn't do that.

It's more of a love it or hate it affair then underrated, but over time I've grown to enjoy Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Like many, I hated it at first. Once you get past the fact that it's not the sequel that you would prefer, it's a very atmospheric and interesting film in it's own right. Although the trademark Twin Peaks humor isn't present for the majority of the film, the opening 20 minutes with Chet and Sam has some great quirky laughs. After that It's crammed with intensity and supernatural horror.

I still hope for all the deleted scenes (over 45 minutes) to see the light of day.

As a side note, did anyone play the awesome Black Lodge game that was released a while back?

As a Shane Black's fan, I always thought that "the Last Boy Scout" and 'the Long Kiss Goodnight" are way underrated. There's a lot of good one-liners in those kick-ass movies. There's "big Trouble in Little China" with Kurt Russell.
"Once upon a time in Mexico" is on the list too. Johnny Depp is great in this flick!

I don't know, Big Trouble has a huge cult following. I agree it's a great film. everyone I know who has seen it loves it. That's the sticking point though I guess, no one outside of my extreme geek friends have heard of it.

I have to mention the Bill and Ted films. Wayne's World, honestly, is a bit smarter and more to my liking, but there's something about Bill and Ted that has me rolling.

Especially the first one. First, I love the "feel" of the scenes that take place in the weird future, particularly the songs the producers chose to use (the opening credits, and during Bill and Ted's quick visit there, where everyone is playing air guitar. It's totally 80's yet I feel my skin get tingly - which is something that no other decade's worth of music has done for me quite that way).

But the other thing about the first film is just the assortment of historical figures featured in it. Genghis Khan is my favorite by far.. they use a Twinkie to get him away form his women. That's all kinds of funny. When he winds up in a sporting goods store and picks up a baseball bat, I really cannot help myself. That is just so damn funny!

The second film has a great turn by William Sadler (Sloan) as Death.

Yeah, that's a great track, assuming we're thinking of the same one. If anyone else is looking for it, it's In Time, by Robbie Robb.

The whole crazy mall scene is brilliantly done. I always crack up. :techman:
