George and Wionna Kirk didn’t know the sex of their baby...

However this is year 2012 and anytime a couple are expecting a child they always know the sex of the baby by the 2nd trimester.

In all honesty I think 80% of couples always find out the sex of their babies before its birth.

These two statements don't go together.

What I mean is in year 2012 which is the time we live now present , most couples already know the sex of their baby by the 5 month of the pregancy.

I've highlighted the contradiction (always vs 80%). chardman and I have offered data that indicates that even 80% is too high.

Regardless of the exact figure, I've also offered proof that there are really people who reject finding out their baby's gender before birth. So have other posters.

Worst thread yet in this forum and that's really saying something.

People always say something is bad when they don’t agree or when you point out the the flaws in a film they love so much. this is expected.

I have watched Star Trek 2009 countless times and I am just pointing out some of the film weakness.

Forgive me for being realistic about what couples do when they are expecting child.

I've been quite critical of this film going all the way back to May 2009. Try again?

Are you married? Have you actually went through the process with a significant other? If not, then you have no real idea of what you're talking about. But then the statistics already prove you have no idea what you're talking about.

Except that it's NOT realistic, but in fact flies in the face of reality. The numbers bear that out. We know from that 2007 Gallup Poll that slightly less than half of today's couples want to know the sex of their unborn children ahead of time, while slightly more than half would prefer to not know their child's gender ahead of time, in spite of the fact that such determinations are easily accomplished in this day and age.

If you can provide more up-to-date sources to the contrary, please feel free to do so. Otherwise, ya might want to accept the notion that actually reality will always be more realistic than (your) unsupported supposition.

Lets not forget, it happened in the Abramsverse, which means it never really happened at all. ;)

I think you've got that backwards;)

How many people will post and say 1bulma1 is wrong before it's settled? Place your bets here.

At least one more.

1bulma1,
I don't know how this is so difficult for you to understand. George and Winona simply did not want to know the gender of their child before it was born. I personally find it more difficult to believe that they, nor Sarek and Amanda discussed baby names until the baby was presented to the mother by the midwife/nurse.

Just because you cannot comprehend not knowing the gender of your own child, doesn't mean that all people from now until the 24th century share your view.

My own future sister-in-law is currently pregnant with her second child and she does not want to know the gender this time.

On the other hand, similar to yourself, I have a friend who hates bananas and cannot comprehend that anyone else would think to enjoy a banana. She is often heard saying "Nobody eats bananas, they're disgusting."

Here's a protip 1bulma1, Not everyone else in the world is you.

Nope not married, however I attended a baby shower last September as my cousin’s wife was having a baby. She told us to buy dresses for a male child.

I can’t believe most people rely so much on polls....majority of the time, polls don’t reflect truth. (I mean just look at polls about presidential candidates and the economy)

Am sure many Couple will say they don’t want to know their child’s sex. However when the woman gets pregnant that all changes.

Also most men in general would like to be told in advance if they are expecting twins. it’s just human fact.

This thread is really absurd.

1bulma1, your own assertion was that 80% of couples find out what the sex of their baby is. That would then mean that 20%, or one fifth, choose not to. I don't know if that figure is accurate or not, but you suggested it, so I'll run with it.

Assuming it's true, then why would it be unrealistic for the Kirks to be a member of that 20% who choose not to find out? Just because something is done less often than something else, doesn't make it unrealistic. Now, if 99.999% of couples found out, you might make the argument. But 80%? Nope. Doesn't hold water.

What you think and what is real aren't the same. People have told you this over and over again, as I predicted. Now I'm wondering who will find a productive tangent to keep the thread alive.

:sigh:

I just don't have the energy to rip this post up, someone else will have to do it.

Horseshit. Seriously. You genuinely can't understand why most people rely on researched conclusions rather than the wholly unsubstantiated and unconfirmed anecdotes like you do? Really? I mean...

In the last few years I have had 4 new babies enter my life. Of those 4 babies, only 1 of their genders was known ahead of time. For the other 3 babies, the parents chose to be surprised. One of those couples also chose to be surprised for their first baby.

So, without using an online poll -- just using my own life experience -- 4 out of 5 babies are born without their gender known beforehand.

Probably they chose not to know. Some parents like the surprise.

NAAAAAAAAAAAA....That’s my point.

it is very unrealistic in this day and age for a couple not to know if they are having a boy or a girl.. very very very unrealistic.

Honesty Star Trek 2009 was an excellent film but the more I watch it the more I begin to notice how less than perfect some of the writing is.

The doctors knew with a pretty good degree of certainty what our baby was going to be, but we chose not to know at the time. We wanted to be surprised.

(...actually, to make a short story long, when my wife began having some potentially dangerous complications, we did ask what it would be, but only because we felt it would be good for our mental state [which was crazy at the time of the complications] to know what sex the baby was; i.e., the baby's sex (girl) became something for us to positively focus on, rather than the negativity of the potential problem/complication.

Thankfully, our daughter was very healthy when she was born, but if it wasn't for the potential complications, I would have been happy to have kept it as a surprise.)

Forgive me for being realistic about what couples do when they are expecting child.

1bulma1 --

But it is NOT being realistic. You are saying what YOU would want. That's not the same as saying what all other couples want.

Some other couples (such as my wife and I) did NOT want to know the sex of our child, even though the doctor/ultrasound tech knew with a pretty good degree of certainty. Even if you argue that MOST want to know, there is still a sizable minority who do not. George and Winona could be just like that sizable minority.

but the answer's obvious - they did know the sex of the baby, but delibarately acted like they didn't know just to annoy 1bulma1

How is this even possible?

In the scene when Wionna gives birth to Jim, George asked for the sex of the baby. Winona tells him it’s a boy. George acted surprised and replied... A BOY?

I thought that scene was a bit unrealistic even though it made George’s Death more heartbreaking and sad...However this is year 2012 and anytime a couple are expecting a child they always know the sex of the baby by the 2nd trimester.

Heck, pregnant women go shopping for baby stuff before the child's birth. Some of her friends even ask if they should shop for blue or pink cloths which is another way of finding out if the baby is going to be a boy or girl.

May be I am been Paranoid but It was just not realistic that Jim’s parents who live in the 24 centaury with all the advanced medical equipments had no clue if they were having a baby boy or girl.

Fans always said the scene where Spock dumps Kirk on Delta Vega was weak/poor writing from Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman . However writing a story where a couple has no clue of the sex of their baby despite living in year 2233 was far worse.

1bulma1, I've asked you more than once to get a blog, and this is exactly the sort of thing I'd like you to put in it, rather than posting it here.

The thread has no clear topic... or perhaps it's got three or four, and can't decide which one is of primary importance.

The thread isn't aimed at intelligent discussion. The first time someone disagrees with one of your unsupported assertions, you respond:
...and it just never gets any better.

That's not going to cut it. Please don't do this again.

This thread is really absurd.
To put it politely.

Now I'm wondering who will find a productive tangent to keep the thread alive.
Hold that thought...
