Does anyone actually want grain as a by-product of a clean, clear, sharp image?

Yes, of course. It's film grain, it's there because that's how film looks. I'm sure in many cases film makers chose specific types of film based on the 'look' the grain would have contributed to the final product. Now a lot of blu-ray conversions have made the mistake of setting their grain phasers to scrub. What we end up with in that scenario are endless scenes where all the faces look unrealistically smooth and plastic.

So yes, give me the film grain if the show was shot on film.

The detail is in the grain, for sure.

I refuse to buy any blu-rays that have been robbed of the grain, and therefore, the detail.

Sorry, I don't mean to be a killjoy... really, I don't. I just don't want your expectations to be that high, only to find out on the day that it's in one of their smaller auditoriums. I'm sure you'll enjoy yourselves, just don't expect IMAX quality (or size).

I can only go by what was on the purchase page. But either way, it's a night out with my daughter whom I took to see First Contact when she was four. So even if it looks like its projected in 480i, it's all good. :techman:

Bah...how I would love to see that on the big screen. But as always we non-US-people miss out on something like that.

On the topic of older TV series being released on Bluray, WB has just announced the complete Friends set: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=8976 They're going with a 16:9 aspect ratio, but it appears it was shot that way (protected for 4:3). Probably a pricey set. Wonder what a complete TNG set would look like.

Probably either simply shrink wrapped together like they did for the TOS Three Season Pack:

Or they'll have a slipcover like the Twilight Zone Complete Series:

I was jealous of our American friends too until a few minutes ago when I found it it'll be screened here in Ottawa. Woohoo!

Hey...seriously...when you put down ten HD Episodes of TNG S2 next
to me...do you think I'm NOT gonna' watch 'em? ‪#nagilum
That would mean they have finished up to episode 36, "The Dauphin", which suggests they're probably busy working on assembling "Contagion" through maybe "Time Squared" about now... in all, 12 episodes left. Seems like they are indeed on track for a Season Two release later this year.

Sounds about right. They're probably aiming for releasing at least two seasons a year (i.e. every 6 months).

No doubt Paramount/CBS will want to release season 2 in time for the holiday season, late november or early december.

I wonder if they're prioritizing the completion of S2 so they can focus on figuring out what to do with Yesterday's Enterprise and BOBW P1. YE has a case of the visuals not really lining up with the story (the Enterprise not looking like a warship and sitting around at the end) and being goofy (giant BoPs). BOBW is just a case of being chock full of VFX shots that need to be recomposited.

I imagine they're prioritizing season two because they can't release it until its actually done.

I walked into that one :rommie:

What I mean is that there seems to be less turnaround between S1 and S2 than there was with The Next Level and S1. Now that could be due to the process speeding up since they've gotten up to speed, but it really seems like they're going at a brisk pace for this sort of thing, even with the tech advantages granted by digital editing tools and running crews 24/7. Sooner or later they're gonna hit a snag, and given how the Okudas already seem to be dreading the remastering of YE and BOBW, it seems likely (to me at least) that season 3/4 will be that snag.

A 60 minute extended cut of "The Measure of a Man"? Count me in!

Here's hoping for extended cuts of more popular episodes. Why not? As long as we still have the option to watch the episode in the original length, I think this is a great idea. I think we may have more confirmation of this at the Fathom 25th Anniversary screening, since they are showing something specifically about "The Measure of a Man."

Whoa... extended cuts?! I never would have imagined that happening. I really have to tip my hat to Paramount if they're doing this. They really are going the extra mile for these Blu-ray releases. They'd already won me over (and have already taken my money) with the sheer difference in picture quality, but this is just the icing on the cake.

After reading the teleplay and watching the episode, it looks like the biggest deletions were:

  • Picard, Admiral Nakamura & Maddox beaming aboard
  • Following corridor/turbolift conversation with Picard, Riker, Nakamura and Maddox
  • Picard talking to Nakamura on viewer in Ready Room
  • Maddox acts like an even bigger dick at Data's party
  • Gymnasium scene between Picard (who's fencing) and Riker
  • Picard prepares Data for trial in Data's quarters
  • Alternate Guinan/Picard scene in Ten Forward (probably re-written and filmed the way we've already seen)

Here's an RTF file with the deleted moments bolded and italicized:
