extended episodes would totally ruin the music/timing/pacing

I hope it's an optional extra
While I'd agree it's best to have the original versions of the episodes as the primary version and recuts as alternates, let's not forget that sometimes shows are truncated to fit into the 43 minutes of time that was allotted, and the best tempo sometimes goes right out the window. And as not every scene is scored, the music isn't necessarily an issue.

As long as they are presented as alternates, I'm fine with whatever. I am somewhat worried that wont be the case though. It's not the worst problem to have, though. I'm buying these things no matter what.

I had no idea that observation lounge element from the main title sequence was very rudimentary animation!
That's great, I had no idea. Like you I assumed they filmed it using actors.
Using crappy animation makes more sense though, it was cheaper and we are the living proof that no one could see a difference.

I remember hearing back in the day that is was just an animation but I always assumed it was black shapes they used because that's how it looked on my TV at the time.

Sci Fi now(UK magazine) just did a 25 year special on TNG which included an interview with Craig Weiss (CBS director of visual effects). He said "there was originally talk of just up-converting from standard def, but we've gone through the arduous process of rebuilding them just for the fans so that the experience from beginning to end will be consistent and really wonderful" really glad they didn't go that route!

Rest of the article was pretty interesting but nothing especially new on the subject.

They also reviewed the first season on blu ray and gave it 4 out of 5 stars. They mainly focused on the non technical side but said the picture was impressive.

Not sure what the forum rules are on scanned in magazine articles but if someone could clarify I would be happy to link it.

Pffft. "Just for the fans". Baloney. They did it to make the show acceptable and attractive for hi-def airing and streaming. Not to be cynical., but statements like this are just sweet sweet lies. :)

Ya know, at this point, I don't care what the studio's motives were. I'm just thrilled beyond belief that they're doing it.

...:vulcan:

Every single extended edition of everything - movie or show - I've ever seen has been nothing but an enhancement.

I mean, extended editions are the actual true edition. Save for the George Lucas retcon star wars bullshit. It's what we where supposed to get/see. We didn't/don't because of time constraints, whether theater run times or show air-times.

Now I've never seen extended cuts *replace* originals, but always as add-on, but still...

Not wanting to see what we should have... even if it means sacrificing what we did see... that strikes me as super-silly.

This really gets me psyched, and I hope to hell we get a lot more.

Oh man, could you imagine extended cut of best of both worlds? That would be epic!

Apocalypse Now Redux is pretty regularly held up as an example where the original theatrical cut is just tighter and better.

There are some examples of directors releasing extended cuts for fans but saying the theatrical cut is the version they intended to put out and consider definitive.
