I just bought a book called 2001: The Lost Science which is a treasure trove of photographs and drawings from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. The drawings and photos come the collection of Frederick I. Ordway who was the main science advisor on the film. If you are a fan of the movie (or just the design aspect of it), this is book is absolutely outstanding.

I had to replace the timing belt and water pump in my engine.

A major portion of the cost was about $600 for a screw cap that needed to be replaced, but was not available on its own. Likewise, a rubber hose needed to be replaced but was also not available for sale individually. Both items were included in repair kits, so while all those new parts were installed in my engine, it doubled the cost of the repair. Fun times!

I go through this every 8 months or so though, where I have to throw ~$500.00 to $900.00 in repairs on my car. This is the last time though; I've already started shopping around for another car. And I guarantee it will not be a Volkswagon.

I did splurge this week and got this though and have been loving every second of it.

It arrived. And it's really rather nice. A very high quality portfolio that has a few marks but is in very good used condition overall and I got it for a fraction of what you'd normally pay for the brand, even used. The leather responded nicely to a little TLC with some nourishing cream too.

You must have quite the collection by now. Do you display them, or hoard them in a giant safe, occasionally swimming amongst them in McDuckesque fasion?

Avoid all VAG cars if this kind of thing bugs you. For example, Audi play a fun maintenance game: nothing can be replaced by you because there's a super-duper secret screwdriver or hidden access port required to get to anything. I have a rear brake light warning currently showing but I've never figured out how to replace them myself (the manual's no help; it tells you not to try and there's no obvious access point) and haven't yet found the time to go the dealer and get it done. IIRC, they've only ever charged me the bulb cost for changing it, but it's the hassle of actually going there, you know?

@Holdfast: Oh I learned years ago how to change my brake and headlights myself. Sooner or later, I'll start changing the oil myself as well. But yeah, fuck the whole mentality of it all. The irony of this time being that literally two days before the warning light came on, I had spent a significant amount of money on plane tickets to go home for my sister's wedding next month.

    -doubleoh, broke.

Today, I received the first season of Whodunnit in the post. The first season (1972) was hosted by Edward Woodward, later seasons by John Pertwee. John Pertwee it seems appeared as one of the panel on at least some of the first season episodes.

I am now going to watch a couple of episodes, pen and paper in hand to write down clues. Hopefully I might be able to solve at least one or two of the Whodunnits during this season.

    ;)

A mixture of different methods. Out on open display, stored in boxes, tucked away inside plastic tubs and containers and stuffed inside drawers. Whatever's most practical and the easiest, really.

And of course, I got rear-ended on the Capital Beltway five days after I drove it off the lot. I probably won't get it back from GEICO's body shop until Monday. :(

Thanks! I just got my invitation in the mail yesterday. I mailed out the RSVP, but I also created an appointment for it in my Google Calendar... and then I invited my sister and her fiancé to join me.

My brother and sister-in-law both have access to my GCalendar so I use it to tease her all the time. They got married a year ago in a very big celebration and I had put the event in my calendar as "Some wedding or something." I love sharing calendars.

Last week I bought the TNG films on Blu-Ray (Amazon had a special deal). Saturday, I bought some coffee and yogurt at Starbucks for breakfast, and chipped in for the pizza lunch we had during our Alien/Predator marathon.

Yesterday, I bought some popcorn and a root beer at Prometheus, and then later some dinner for my date and I.

Today, I bought another coffee for my co-worker and I, plus a Starbucks gift card for her (today's her birthday.)

I'm looking forward to NOT spending any more money for the next few days.
