That's the Best They Could Come Up With?

Let me start by saying that I liked Star Trek 09. I want to like this next one. But with all the ideas of what to do with a new Trek film, Khan was all they could come up with? There's really only been 11 Trek films, and they feel the need to reuse the villain from one of these again? I really, really hope this will be an outstanding film, and I'll love it, but I'm dissapointed if this rumor is true. Anyone else share these feelings?

Everyone's been sharing those and other feelings in the thread titled "SPOILERS!!! NEW AICN RUMORS (APRIL 30)", which is all about that very news/rumor thingy.

I don't see it as any different to Batman fighting The Joker again and again. Khan is Kirk's "greatest nemesis ever", and now 30+ years later we get to see them go at it again, in a NEW story (it's NOT a remake of Wrath of Khan or Space Seed, any more than The Dark Knight remade 1989's Batman) with modern SFX and a $150 million budget.

That's my take. It may suck, it may rock (hoping for the latter!). But bringing back classic villains in new scenarios isn't a problem for me.

Exactly. The 1966 "Batman" movie featured four villains: Joker, Penguin, Catwoman and Riddler. When the rebooted Batman films started in 1989, we got Joker (again), then Penguin (again) and Catwoman (again), and then Riddler (again) with a character never featured on film (or TV) before: Two-Face!

Three
films before they tried out a new character from the comics.

I think the last couple movies should have stayed away from the whole kirk spock scenario...........fuck them they had more than enough movies about them.

A ds9 movie would have been great a number of years back but they need to try something new or different,

Like it or not, Star Trek is Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise to the general public. Who don't give a shit about Deep Space Nine.

We really don't know what they've come up with, yet. The story must need Khan. Beyond that, there are hundreds of original story lines that could incorporate him. It's a matter of trust, I guess.

Khan is so highly thought of, that based on only one epic go-round with Kirk in TWOK (let's face it, "Space Seed" itself does not make Khan a legend), he's put into the same category of villains as the Joker or Lex Luthor. Every Trek movie after TWOK that had a villain had to answer to whether or not the villain would be as strong as Khan. None were. The new film will have to answer that question directly, this time. Who knows until we see it whether or not it will compare well in depth of conflict and use of the character.

even if what you say is true, its not the same kirk but this bastardized version.

For the record not every trek fan would be familar with the original series

Every iteration of Kirk is someone's interpretation of the character and they're not always consistent. But once they got Pine onto the bridge of the Enterprise, I enjoyed his interpretation of the character a great deal.

Even if one hasn't seen TOS, if they're a fan of later Trek they're familiar with TOS. Hell, McCoy has a cameo in the very first episode of Modern Trek and Kirk is mentioned in the second. But this works from the flawed premise that Trek is made for Trek fans only.

As another poster wrote, it's not like they're re-making "space seed" or "TWOK." We'll have to see how it goes.

My guess is it'll be a fun but dumb action romp with great effects and battle scenes that leaves you satisfied but also somewhat empty. Junkfood Trek if you will.

Just a hunch.

I'm not happy about Khan probably being in this, but when I think about it, this "team" has brought us other shows that probably shouldn't have worked, such as Lost, Fringe, Cloverfield. No one knew what to do with a show about an airplane crash on an island...they wound up making it about NOT getting off the island, quite brilliant.

At least it's better tasting than the McTrek slop Berman was cranking out at he end of his run.

That's the thing about reboots/remakes/resets--you get to do stuff over again. With a lot more explosions.

The nice thing about reboots is, every once in a while, they offer the opportunity to fix the mistakes of last time.

This is one of those times.

Trouble is, canonically, that invalidates what came before. Ooops, I forgot, we're dealing with an alternate reality, we can do whatever we want to established, beloved characters, in the name of money - oh darn, I meant in the name of art.

eh? Space Seed and TWOK are generally regarded as Trek at its finest. In what way would a reboot with Khan "fix" a "mistake?"

Bullshit, I would rather watch Berman Trek than "JJTrek" anyday....:p

This. I don't like my "beloved" characters getting messed with. They sure haven't gotten ANY of mine in the theater or DVD!

And the ST movies aren't made for "the fans". We are about 10% of the intended audience. Less than 1% buy the tie-in merchandise.

The ST movies are made to attract members of the general public.

Still got your attention, though. And any negativity you generated may even have stirred up some curiosity in new attendees to the movie. ;)

Unless you are speaking of terms of being on a couple of forums, I disagree. Most of the people I know haven't spoken with me or I them about the film. To this day they could care less about watching a Star Trek film, let alone mentioning it in a conversation, or even bringing up "JJ TREK". And they know about my affinity with it.
