I'd say that scientists would be much more likely to be eligible than current politicians, with Stephen Hawking being the most obvious candidate.

I wouldn't be surprise if someone somewhere named something after Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama. Apparently he has a vigorous interest in science, and he's well-loved across the world...just not in China.
Of course, a Tibetan spiritual leader's name would be entirely out of place on a military vessel. Perhaps, though, if Starfleet had a vessel committed purely to peaceful matters like diplomacy, his legacy might be appropriate.
Oh, sure! Either a ship, or perhaps an orbital telescope/observatory/space station. I for one was thrilled that Christopher Bennett named a ship Asimov in his first DTI book, although the maestro died in 1992.
