Mass Effect (1)

Well I've managed to finish the Noveria mission so I just have Feros and Virmire. Definitely getting the hang of the combat, both in the Mako and on the missions. Occasionally I'll get overwhelmed and die but I've picked up enough tricks to figure out how to win. And isn't that one of the constants of RPGs? Adjusting strategy to the enemies' weaknesses?

I just hit level 30 so I guess I'm around halfway through the game. Definitely thinking about the best way to get my hands on Mass Effect 2. Used game store, or Amazon? I also think I want the dlc mentioned above. I think I want to wait until right before the endgame to get that though.

Not necessarily. Levels are definitely a curve, not a line! Your first runthrough you'll be capped at level 50.

Amazon. The code inside for free DLC might still be good. (Plus I don't like used sales in general. :techman:)

Well I figured the levels were on a curve so I thought if I'm 60% of the way through the levels then it's probably 50% through the game. But I'll be pleased to find there is more game. I'm doing all the side quests I can to prolong the experience.

^ Side quests are good. A bit repetitive with the combat maybe, but there's a lot of little things in there that's a lot of fun. Have you done anything for Rear Admiral Kahoku yet?

throwback, you need to spoiler code that entire second paragraph. Ood Sigma is still playing the first game.

Christ sake man! He's still playing the FIRST BLOODY GAME! SPOILERS!

How hard is it to not spoil a game for someone. I'm enjoying reading his "virgin" reactions to the ME universe! So don't ruin it!

HotRod I completely agree with you...

Fourthed!

So out of curiosity, did you have Liara with you at Peak 15? And what'd you do with Rachni Queen?

Yes, I did his quests. He's dead now. Those were the Cerberus quests, right?

And as for Liara at Peak 15, yes, I took her with me after someone in my party suggested I should. My go-to team is usually Ashley and Tali so I had to go back to the ship to pick up Liara (really wish there was a quicker mechanic for changing your party, but it's realistic, I suppose!)

I chose to let the Queen go.
It seemed like the Paragon thing to do. I have a tough time in any game (like Dragon Age: Origins) going the "evil" route. I guess I just don't like people mad at me, even if they're fictional! Anyway I hope my decision doesn't come back to bite me the way Ashley seems to think it will.

I'll second Amazon, the free DLC is worth the extra cost. If you're willing to pay for it then all the story DLC in ME2 is worth it. Although you might want to hold off on downloading the last two until you've finished the game, they're supposed to be post-game content but if you download them early then they'll pop up in the middle of the game and break the flow of the story.

Yeah but you can ignore the first one of those two until the post game part the second not so much.

Kasumi's Lost Memory should absolutely be done before the endgame, otherwise it makes no sense. Lair of the Shadow Broker can be done either or. Arrival should be done post-game.

Lair can be done either-or, but the writers intended it to be done post-finale.

I think Overlord is supposed to be pre-finale, though.

Overlord definitely works better pre-finale.

...Why are we talking about ME2 DLC in a thread about a newcomer's ME1 playthrough? :ouch:

Because Ood was musing on his upcoming purchase of ME2, so people started chiming in with suggestions on DLC timing in the game.

May be a little premature since he hasn't gotten the game yet, but there is at least a reason. ;)

Yeah, I don't mind the advice on dlc, since I asked for opinions on buying from amazon. Might be awhile before I get to that dlc though.

I'm on the side geth missions in the Armstrong Cluster. The one I'm stuck on is pretty tough but I feel I'm getting close. After that I'll take on Feros.

^ I had a really hard time with the Armstrong Cluster missions with my first character, one in particular on a snow-blowing planet took me many many tries.

:techman: Pretty sick bastards those Cerberus fellows, eh?

Guess you'll find out... ;)

I was the same way, I don't know that I'll ever be able to do a truly Renegade playthrough.

:techman: Also, Overlord... *shiver*

Yes, the ice planet is the one giving me fits. I'll try it again tonight. My problem is the cannon is relatively ineffective against the snipers, and I can't take out the Geth Colossus quickly enough because of all the fire I'm taking from the snipers.

BTW, I just ordered ME2 from Amazon. Should get here in a few days, although I really don't know how much longer it will take to get through part 1. Probably another week or two.

Something that worked for me was to run the Mako behind a hill and snipe. Basically, if you're coming in from the pass at the south there's a mountain off to your right - drive up it and you'll come to a place where you're covered from all fire, but if you "jump" you can gt a show with your cannon and take minimal fire in return. Slow and annoying, but eventually works.

Alternately, do you have much of any skill with sniper rifles? What I did as an Infiltrator was drive the Mako up there and do the same thing, but without the annoyance of "hopping," just moving forwards and back. Scary to see rockets coming right at you, but if you move right you'll be fine.

I managed to pass that scenario pretty quickly. What I did is to destroy most of the geth, then I backed way out, fixed my Mako, and came back for round 2. Pretty easy that way.

Tonight I did a bunch of exploring and then started Feros. I think I'm close to the end of that mission now. The story missions are a lot of fun and I'm greatly enjoying them. So glad I stuck with it. Believe it or not, I'm actually starting to enjoy the combat!

What I found with the Mako missions is to just DRIVE. It's usually not contingent on completing the mission to kill everyone- just drive through them and you'll get to where you're going.

Yes, but then you're missing out on the XP, even if it is halved. I'd agree with you if it were like ME2 where you're granted XP on a per mission, not per kill basis. Just took an infiltrator through ME2 and I'd often cloak just to bypass combat and reach an objective, since you don't get anything for killing. ;)
