Of course they never knew what happened to their masters, they are dogs. It's not like explaining it to them is going to make them understand.

The sad thing is if someone doesn't have anyone to give their dog away to and have to leave it in a kennel situation.

 

Lies to make people feel good about a war in which soldiers are killed every day "to keep those horrible people [yeah, those terrible Iraqi invaders] from coming over here [in the US]" are more important than knowing the truth. Weird.

 

Yeah that's what I can't stand about these forwards, they are written to stir people's patriotism and make them feel good about fighting for "freedom". It's inviting the reader to participate in the mythos.

 

It's not even about making people feel good about "fighting for freedom" (which, even if misdirected, shows at least the will to put your life on the line), it's about making them feel good about voting for cynic politicians which have nothing in mind but their own interests.

 

They understand their owner is gone. Dogs form emotional bonds with their owners. Take that owner away suddenly and they never return, and that makes for a sad situation.

Yes, it is sad.

 

Kennels are atrocious. They serve a practical purpose like many other things in this world, but I'm just so grateful I have extended family and several dear friends I could leave my dog with if I had to. I'd hate to leave my girl locked up in a cold, unfeeling kennel not knowing when her master was going to come back(if ever)...she gets separation anxiety quite easily and she'd be a terrific wreck if she had to spend days and days in a kennel. I know some people have to use them, but who the bloody hell would desire to and think they're something to applaud?

 

Dallie was the same way. She'd start to shiver and shake when it looked like I was about to go anywhere. As soon as I would come back, she wouldn't leave my side the whole time I was home. That little dog was attached to me, and the feeling was mutual.

 

Yes but you're lamenting that the dogs didn't know what happened to their masters.

 

If you were going to war for several years would you leave your dog in a freaking kennel for all that time and not allow them to be adopted until you were dead? Now that's cruel.

 

Thankfully I'm not going off to fight in any war. But a couple of my closest relatives have already agreed that should anything tragic befall me in the foreseeable future that they would gladly and willingly adopt my dog to make sure she's properly loved and taken care of, so in any scenario where I die or become incapacitated to such a degree that I can no longer care for her she'll be well looked-after by people I can trust.

My view on kennels is shared by a quite a few people I know...they might serve a practical purpose like many things in this world, but they're not terribly pleasant places and you should only put a pet in one if you have no other options.

 

That's not my point--the guy in that made up story did have an option. He could have found a home for his dog or asked the kennel to find a home for his dog. Instead he leaves the dog there for potentially years and the only way the dog can have a home again is if the guy dies. I'm sure you wouldn't leave your dog in a kennel for years because you might get to have her again some day.

 

Hell, I wouldn't put her in a kennel in the first place. Not unless all of my friends and family suddenly vanished off the face of the planet leaving me no other choice. Kennels are jails. Jails for innocent animals who've done nothing but in some cases be inconveniences to their masters. They're preferable to letting an animal roam the streets or countryside, but they're not anything to applaud. I knew a guy who once bragged about leaving his dog in a kennel while he took his girlfriend on some whirlwind tour of the American West and California. The guy positively bragged about it and beamed about not having to take care of his pet the whole time.

Why did the guy even have a dog in the first place?!

 

It's true, though. All they know is their old master is gone. They don't understand what happened.

 

So how it's different for them if their owner is killed in Iraq, got run over but a school bus in Cincinnati, or simply died of old age?

But it doesn't matter: bottom line, the "story" is a piece of fluff intended to rouse the spirit of people at home about a meaningless, continuing war in which soldiers are killed by the hundreds and civilians by the thousands.

And all that some people think is about a non-existent pet and go "aww that poor dawggie". Bah.
