Just as an aside, I understand that for a lot of folks money is tight, whether in the US or the UK. I do find it weird that sometimes (and no I'm not claiming that the "sometimes" includes any discussions on Trek BBS) you hear folks harp about the cost of Blu-rays or DVDs, and the next thing you hear they're shelling out $60 on a PS3 game (Mass Effect 3 is a great example; I'm buying mine in 6 months when it's knocked down to $20 at Walmart) or hundreds on the latest iPad without batting an eyelash.
That copy of Mass Effect 3 takes about fifty hours to do a single playthrough. Plus there's multiplayer on top of that. A season of TNG at the same price will give me less than half the entertainment-per-dollar. (And that's before you get into how TNG will always be the same on rewatches, but Mass Effect 3 can actually offer up some variation.)

I don't think it's hypocritical or "weird" to wish that Blu-rays and DVDs were priced to give about the same entertainment-per-dollar.

(Mass Effect 3 was probably a bad example here, by the way. You would've had a better case with Modern Warfare 3 or some other shooter with a 4-6 hour campaign. ;))

I hope we get decent extras for the price we are paying for the set(s):) Some decent two hour documentary about the first season would be nice plus some new cast interviews, with some questions going deeper than the usual "What is your favorite episode?".

Anyway, I was visiting my folks couple of weeks ago and decided to buy the TNG Next Level and watch all the episodes, while I was there.
I have to say that I was very impressed about the quality of the picture and it was very cool to re-watch Encounter at Farpoint again..and the other episodes too, though those I have watched much more often.
The new transfer does bring lots of life to the images and Enterprise-D looked very beautiful( and Denise Crosby was hotter in that uniform than I remember..plus Trois legs;)).
Needless to say, that I am looking forward of watching the whole season one:techman:

According to Burnett's Facebook page, they found the missing piece from "Sins of the Father"!

"It was indeed found and replaced. For the season three box set, SINS will be intact. We deal with this in a documentary for Season One."

Looks like his Facebook account is private. Perhaps you can ask him about the 15% cropping issue on all of SINS's non VFX shots. Will those be fixed as well?

I can't make any guarantees. He responds... sparingly. :) Besides, he's producing extras. I imagine he's kept in the loop on certain things but I don't believe he's involved in the actual transfer process.

Well, maybe we'll see some new corrected footage of SINS in the aforementioned documentary he's producing.

EDIT: I was just thinking, having finally located this missing piece of film somewhere among the Season 3 negatives, this probably means that they're about 37% into scanning all the negative for TNG ("Sins of the Father" is the 65th episode out of 178).

Updated TrekCore coverage with Burnett's two remastered stills (From 'Datalore' and now 'Code of Honor'). Posted the original SD stills for comparison plus a small review!

The Chrystalline Entity looks amazing in that shot. Man I wish they had a channel on TV that would pick them up in syndication so I can just see what it looks like without having to buy the sets. They did it with Star Trek, they should be able to do it with TNG too.

Cool...new stuff!!! So maybe we'll see $65-70 for a set in the USA...that's not too bad at all!!

That's great to hear.

Incidentally, I'm loving how openly and honestly this project is being handled. I look forward to the special features!

It's coming to Netflix, isn't it? Failing that, there'll be clips on YouTube, etc.

Pretty sure they did say that this will air on TV at some point. My guess is after the first few seasons have been released.

Well, at least we know how the Crystalline entity will look both in the Season 1 and Season 5 box sets (since it appeared in Silicon Avatar in Season 5---of course it'll be interesting to see how they cause it to explode this time around-that twitchy dance it did in the original before exploding, just never looked really good). But, with the Crystalline Entity, I wonder if they still had access to the either the 1987 or 1991 CGI files, and if they were possible able to use those as a base for the 2012 CGI. (Of course the CGI issue is probably more like Toy Story's CGI issues for the 3rd film---they could look at the original files but not manipulate them.)

Of course both shots look wider than the original (in the Code Of Honor shot it looks like the leader's head is a little higher than in the remastered shot).

Of course with TV airings it'll be interesting to see how the show looks in 16:9.

It will probably be pillar boxed to fit 16:9. All the reports so far have indicated original aspect ratio is the way they're going.

My apologies if this was answered earlier, but was it ever said if they were going to fix the "Sins of the Father" cropping issues (top and bottom trimmed)?

To my knowledge, no one involved in the project has even acknowledged such an issue exists... even though it very clearly does -- on all four sides, not just the top and bottom. We'll just have to wait till we see more footage from that episode in a documentary that will be on the season one set according to Robert Meyer Burnett.

And just to be clear, the documentary apparently deals with the missing footage, NOT the cropping issue. But if they've already taken the extra step of re-scanning the footage from that episode (unlikely to happen, in my opinion), we may see the new results in the documentary. But again, it's unlikely.

Gods, £50 is a *bit* more than I thought, but its certainly not terrible. Not by a long shot. And besides, knowing the UK supermarket competitivity, you can bet there'll be some form of a price war on it, with places like Tesco, ASDA and Morrisons vying to be the cheapest. I'm not saying we'll see it thrown away for £30, but we'll at least get down to £40-£45 before launch I reckon.

Hell, I'll be buying it.

I very much doubt that most, if any of us, will see this on any supermarket shelves. The majority of Tesco stores have sweet FA in the way of Blu-ray selections, and what little they have isn't usually below £20 for a single disc movie. Years ago, my local Tesco was trying to flog Quantum of Solace on BR for £25. :scream: Needless to say, the cases were there for a very long time before they were taken off sale.

Morrisons has no online presence, and you won't see them stocking TNG in stores. It's too expensive a niche product that will have very limited demand. Most Morrisons only stock what's in a top 10 BR chart, and you won't find TNG in that. And Morrisons BR prices are far from competitive against the likes of Amazon.

Sainsburys and Asda I can't speak for as I don't have either within nearly 30 miles of my Starfleet Command bunker. :guffaw:

That's really cool that you understand that many languages and it's great that you want to practice them more, but what you're suggesting is adding 14 additional Dolby Digital 2.0 foreign language tracks at 224kbps. That's nearly 1GB more data per episode... and on a disc containing as many as 5 episodes, that's just about 5GB of space needed just for those tracks.

So CBS would have to either reduce the video bitrate of each episode from an average of 17Mbps* to <15Mbps... or alternatively, reduce the number of episodes per disc, which would increase the disc count of the sets and therefore the price.

I have no problem with that, as long as they do it in Region B. Region A should stay with English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese.

* On the Next Level disc, which has one double length episode and two standard length (equivalent of 4 episodes), the bitrate is 22Mbps on average. One reason they look really good.

I find that the language options on "the next level" for region A (America) were apparently not the best choice (and the same as in Europe). Portuguese instead of german would be more logical, but maybe there is no complete Portuguese dubbing available???

So they put now 5 episodes on blu-ray instead of 4 on the DVD sets? So they should rather stay with 4 episodes and put more language audio options on the disks. This should NOT significantly increase the price. The blu-ray releases of TV series that I bought have max 4 episodes and the price was not higher but rather lower than for the new TNG sets.
