It is common knowledge that years before Deep Space Nine and Enterprise did "Mirror Universe" episodes that the writer who penned the orginal "Mirror, Mirror" submitted a script to The Next Generation producers for a sequel to that episode.

IIRC, according to Starlog, he submitted it during the third season of ST:TNG. But the script featured one or more of the original series characters and the producers did not want to do that back then.

Is there any way to get a copy of that script?

I never heard this one. Would've been interesting, even without any TOS characters.

In the 3rd season of TNG, it might still have been better than the MU stuff we got in DS9.

One of my favorite novels was always Dark Mirror.

He submitted his script during the Third Season. Presumably if it had been produced it would've been during the Fourth Season sometime.

Never heard of Bixby writing a TNG sequel to Mirror, Mirror.

Is it possible it got re-worked to become "Yesterday's Enterprise"? That's the closest TNG ever got to a mirror universe story.

    Not necessarily.

It was mentioned in Starlog well after "Yesterdays Enterprise" aired so I have my doubts.

Very likely, the only remaining copies would be with the estate of Jerome Bixby, if there.

If Paramount had bothered to keep any of the freelance pitched scripts, the likelihood that they weren't torched after TNG (or DS9, Voyager or Enterprise) ended is slim.

Does a spec script, even one from an established writer with an agent, become the property of the studio it was submitted to even if it was never produced or does it revert to being the property of the writer?

I don't know the particulars, but it is entirely possible the writers kept his draft "on the books" as it were, for possible future use/retooling. If it had survived to the point when Enterprise wrapped production, it's highly likely Bixby's draft was tossed in the recycle bin.

Whether or not the "rights" to the story reverted back to Bixby (bearing in mind it was a story about Star Trek, a property Paramount owns) is a different matter entirely.

Like I said initially - the best place to start would be the Bixby's estate.

The script itself is always property of the writer due to separation of rights in the WGA agreement. It's the use of the script that the studios have; i.e. the rights to produce an episode based on that script.

I was going through some old Starlogs and the article about Jerome Bixby said the script for the sequel to "Mirror, Mirror" was called "Broken Mirror".
