2012 NFL Offseason

What an amazing trade for the Rams, and something that should put the 49ers in some consideration to just ask about Payton Manning. I used to think maybe it was a bad idea for Manning to be considered, but after seeing what the Rams did last night, it couldn't hurt to just ask.

Just looking at the Niners' free agents, I think they've got bigger things to worry about:

QB Alex Smith
FB Moran Norris
WR Braylon Edwards
WR Joshua Morgan
WR Ted Ginn Jr.
WR Brett Swain
TE Justin Peelle
RG Adam Snyder
OG Chilo Rachal
DE Will Tukuafu
OLB Ahmad Brooks
ILB Blake Costanzo
ILB Larry Grant
ILB Tavares Gooden
CB Tramaine Brock (EFA)
CB Carlos Rogers
FS Dashon Goldson
FS Madieu Williams
FS Reggie Smith
SS C.J. Spillman

Ahmed Brooks just signed a 6 year extension but yeah I agree. Still think it might be better going after a wide reciever, but it is Payton Freaking Manning. Like I said, all you gotta do is ask.

Sadly for my team who's in dire need of a safety, Goldson has been franchised, thus he's out of the picture.

ESPN.com claims that Manning's narrowed his choices to the Broncos and Cardinals:

Posted this here instead of the Manning's Future thread due to the ripple effect it would have with other players. :guffaw: at the thought of Tebow getting shipped off somewhere else after being the NFL and ESPN's golden boy last season--looks like Elway found a way to bench/trade Tebow and not piss off the fans. The article says Manning's favoring Denver which makes them instant contenders in their weak division (assuming his arm strength is what it was before the surgeries).

EDIT: Forgot to add, congrats to the Rams for completely bending over the Redskins and practically stealing all those draft picks. The Redskins mortgaged their future for the #2 pick when they have a ton of holes to fill...will be interesting to see if their gamble pays off.

Not many people are aware of this, but there's a precedent for insane trade scenarios with the George Allen coached Redskins back in the 70s.

He basically traded away the majority of his draft picks for experienced talent from other teams (median agent around 31) which proved a successful strategy.

It's definitely going to be interesting. One can make the argument, one with which that I would probably agree, that Griffin is the second-best quarterback prospect at the time of the draft in the last decade or so. He's going to be one of the fastest players in the league (at any position), and, unlike most extremely toolsy quarterback prospects (see: Vick, Michael; Tebow, Tim), he's a very accurate passer with a good arm.

That he happens to be in the same draft as the best quarterback prospect perhaps ever doesn't change that. Griffin is a far better prospect than any of the recent first overall pick quarterbacks, for starters. All draft pick quarterbacks are not created equal.

Aside from having a better talent base already than drafting 6th overall would indicate (their record was largely due to what was possibly the worst quarterback controversy in league history), Washington's got an enormous amount of cash and cap room to go buy more pieces in free agency. Beyond that, for all of Mike Shanahan's legitimate coaching issues, he's been a pretty good quarterback guy throughout his career. This trade was definitely a risk, but I don't think it's tantamount to jumping off a bridge without a bungee cord.

RG3 or not, we can stick a fork in the Redskins for the foreseeable future...

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7...s-washington-redskins-lose-millions-cap-space

The NFL is taking away millions of dollars of salary-cap space belonging to the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins for front-loading contracts during the uncapped 2010 season, according to league sources.

The salary cap is projected to be $120.6 million in 2012, but the Cowboys will lose $10 million, while the Redskins will be docked $36 million in cap space, sources said.

Dallas and Washington can split the cap loss over the 2012 and '13 seasons in whatever form they prefer, with $1.6 million each going to the other 28 NFL teams, the sources said.

I can't even fathom how this is possible, but $36m over two years is going to kill any chances they have of signing any decent free agents.

This is the Redskins we're talking about. Starting up top with Snyder who feels he can buy success, going down the line to Shanahan who got busted for salary cap violations while with the Broncos in the late 90s.

As for why the Redskins are in such a quagmire, they're being punished for pushing 21m of Haynesworth's contract and 15m of Landry's into 2010.

Cheers.

Well, at least Haynesworth was worth it....

Prior to the uncapped year, the competition committee warned teams that punishment would be levied for taking advantage of the circumstances. The Redskins and Cowboys were the most egregious offenders, as they dumped huge base salaries to players such as DeAngelo Hall, Albert Haynesworth and Miles Austin into the 2010 season in order to get the big numbers in those deals off the books while there was no cap.

The Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints took advantage on a more marginal level, in terms of front-loading contracts.

Adam Schefter, on his facebook page, claims Randy Moss has signed with the 49ers.
I wish him well.

This is confirmed now.

Should be interesting...

It's a one-year deal. What's the worst that could happen?

Moss is a great player when his head is on straight--hopefully Harbaugh can motivate Moss the way Belichick did.

EDIT: I'm completely shocked. The Bears practically stole Brandon Marshall from the Dolphins for two third round draft picks:

http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/stor...de-brandon-marshall-chicago-bears-sources-say

Fills some of their vast needs at WR and makes Cutler happy. Nice.

If the "2 third rounders" part is true (SI said they were undisclosed picks), it can only be a good thing.

Does Marshall still "have it" though? Is he as good as ever?

Considering he pulled down 1,200 yards receiving with Miami's clusterfuck of QBs last year, I'd say he'll be even more dangerous paired up with Cutler again.

The Redskins shelled out $8 million a year for Garcon. What in the world. He isn't even as good as the other wideouts already on the team.
