2012 NFL Offseason

Colts to release Peyton Manning tomorrow.

Really not a surprise at all. It's unfortunate it had to end this way, but there was no way Indy was going to pick up that $28 million bonus when they have a prospect like Andrew Luck on the horizon.

What a shame. Always loved the rivalry between the Colts and the Patriots.
As long as he's not going to our AFC division rivals (ideally to the NFC), I hope he picks up where he left off on another team.

Technically he's not been release quite yet so the Seahawks and 'Skins will have to wait at least another half-day. ;)

They're so boned. Luck's gonna get crushed for the next few years unless Indy manages to transplant an actual defense and a running back in there.

To be fair, that's how things were when Peyton took over from Jim Harbaugh back in '98, so it's not like Indianapolis hasn't been there before.

The Rams should fire Williams. Right now.

I'd be shocked if this wasn't going on in many locker rooms around the league. The Saints got caught, but I doubt that with all the showboating and trash talking that goes on, this is an isolated incident.

Maybe, maybe not. I don't know.

As a Rams fan, I was not really thrilled with his hiring in the first place.

No doubt, but it's not going to help the Saints any. Imagine it'll be treated just like SpyGate was: pretend that this is the only place it ever happened, clamp down hard on it, and let everyone else quietly put a stop to it. If they let it get past that stage, drags the whole NFL down. If New England was the only one taping things, imagine there would have been outrage from other teams/coaches, rather than the crickets we got. Same with this, this probably happens in 90% of the locker rooms if not more. Saints got caught, so they'll be the example. Everyone else gets the chance to quietly sweep it under the rug and make sure it doesn't happen again...

Not surprising at all that Peyton is out at Indianapolis. Doesn't make me any less upset with Jim Irsay. I'll still root for the Colts as strongly as I have since Peyton was first drafted there. I just won't care anything at all for their owner. No matter where Peyton winds up, I'll be cheering him on... hopefully all the way to another Super Bowl.

Still not sure I'd risk trying to come back, if I was in his shoes. Hot wife, young children, more money than he can ever spend, and would be a shoo-in to pretty much any TV job he wanted. Or could go into coaching (seems like he could probably coach up Andrew Luck, no?).

Going back out there, risks permanent damage to a already messed up neck. Having a bad knee because of football is one thing, being in a wheelchair (or worse) is another. Plus, if he comes back and just isn't the old Peyton, it'll be a depressing thing for both us and him.

Personally, I'd call it a day, recover, and get a nice TV gig somewhere. Quit while you're still in decent health, and be thought of as going out on top (or near it). Not worth the risk, IMO...

The thing is that we don't REALLY know the extent of Peyton's recovery from neck surgery. He could very well be 100% or close to it. He was filmed practicing throwing at Duke, but what do we know beyond that? We don't know if Irsay was saying the things he said just to force Peyton out or if there really is some question as to his health. We won't know the answer to that until he steps onto the field in the fall. Even then, he's not that much more at risk than anyone else who plays the game. Bottom line: As long as Peyton believes he can go, Peyton will play regardless of the fact that he's financially secure.

I have no doubt something like this goes on in every NFL locker room, but I suspect the NFL thinks "knock the shit out of him" is different than "here's $10,000 to knock the shit out of him".

But you believe that it was happening with the Bills until Williams left, then happened with the Redskins, then completely stopped there and started in New Orleans? Seems likely that it was still happening in those other places, unless the new coaches clamped down hard on it. It would be more shocking if New Orleans was the ONLY place this was going on. And I mean the bounty money, not just the desire to knock Brady or Manning out of a game as a better opportunity to win...

Let's not forget that Williams and Fisher both are disciples of Buddy Ryan who himself was rather notorious for his own bounties (hell, it's purported that he held a bounty against Luis Zendejas, a freaking kicker for the Cowboys).

The Titans in the late 90s and early 2000s were oftentimes characterized as being chippy and dirty, so I woudn't be surprised if a similar system was in place there.

There's been a lot of talk here in the Bay Area about the 49ers picking them up and I just hope they don't. For one, we don't know how healthy Manning is, but more important than that, the 49ers have an opportunity here at something they haven't had an opportunity for in 7 years, consistency. Alex Smith is coming off his best year of his career, and the team was an OT away from even going to the Super Bowl. I say focus more on getting a wide receiver, and allow Smith and Harbaugh that second year together where they both will be better.

Wow, the Redskins with the #2 pick, but they need so much more to be relevant than one good QB.

They'll be giving up 1st round picks in 2013 & 2014 on top of swapping 1st round picks and giving up their 2nd rounder this year.
