I'd call myself a semi-hardcore fan. I've never played the original, but I love two and three. Couldn't finish part four, and never regained the interest to play it. I love Origins and Homecoming, but never played Shattered Memories. So out of seven games in the series I've really only beat four of them, still not a bad track record.
Anyways, I'm kind of interested in the new game coming out this October. According to the premise (and E3 trailer) you're a convict who's aboard a prison bus that runs off the road and you end up in Silent Hill. Outside of that I really have no idea what the game is about.
Besides that interesting premise, the biggest piece of news is that Akira Yamaoka isn't returning to do the score as he left Konami back in '09. This actually caused me alarm at first since it's his sound that is so associated with the series, however Daniel Licht the composer from Dexter has taken over. It will be interesting to see what he can contribute to the series.
All in all I'm rather excited. When they branch out and try to give us new storylines set within Silent Hill is when I respond the most (part two and Homecoming being stand out games for me), but when they go back to the well again and again I kind of roll my eyes (Origins and Shattered Memories trying to revisit the first game, though I do enjoy Origins).
Here's the most current trailer for the game:
