And with an av like that, you're a shoo-in for Baddest Trek Villain of All Time!!!
Let's not forget, Spock was engaged in a pretty nasty fight with Kirk in the first movie, so Cumberbatch is no doubt destined to be the new captain of the Enterprise.
Cumberbatch can't possibly have any less experience than Kirk had when he got promoted at the end of the last film.

Cumberbatch is playing the Starfleet analog to a US Marshall, trying to take the dangerous and desperate renegades into custody, and getting his ass handed to him.
Or he's a Salt Monster. Either way works for me.

The screenwriters also said that IDW's ongoing comic, set between the two movies and with story suggestions from Orci, would be filled with easter eggs that would become obvious when we finally see the movie sequel in cinemas. I can't imagine the killing off of Gary Mitchell in the comic is supposed to be any kind of easter egg for a movie that features an alive-again Gary Mitchell.

I'm liking that they didn't change the uniforms for this film. So often in TREK the Starfleet outfits change for no logical or explained reason. This is keeping in tradition with TOS, that kept the same basic uniform design for 78 of its 80 episodes and throughout all 22 episodes of TAS.
