I think my girlfriend is a Christian! Advice needed.

But.... what's the point of having an opinion or believing (or I suppose not believing in this case) in something if you aren't going to beat someone over the head with it? It just sucks all the fun out of it.

Isn't that the entire reason the TrekBBS exists in the first place?

I dunno. I feel like the best thing about being an Atheist is that I really couldn't care less about anybody else's religious affiliation. To me, being an Atheist is the absence of religion. It's not even worth mentioning.

Eh, I think disbelieving in a higher power is still a form of belief.

I'm content to remain Agnostic myself.

I think you want the 'JJ Abrams Star Trek 2009' threads.

...
Well, turns out I was right all along. She hung up right after I finally told her I'm an athiest. Proof that she never could have accepted it and things never could have worked between us. I felt bad about the way things had gone down, but somewhat vindicated in my beliefs.
:wtf:
No, she hung up BECAUSE YOU'RE A CREEPY, FUCKING STALKER!! She probably thought you were going to chain her in a pit under your floorboards.

I don't disbelieve...
I just.. don't believe in god/s...

It's a belief, sure, but it's a pretty benign belief. I mean, how many evangelical atheists do you know? Most Atheists, at least from my experience, really don't give a shit about what other people believe in. A lot of Christians, however, seem to get upset when they find out people don't believe in God.

And yes, I'm generalizing. I just find it funny that (again, from my own experience) Atheists tend to be the most tolerant group of people.

Many, on the internet. Numerous boards I'm on, the atheists are always referring to the bible as "a book of myths" and religious people as deluded, deranged or insane because they believe in something higher. (I mean, just look at Richard Dawkins. Now THAT is an evangelical atheist.)

People on the internet aren't real. :p

Must... remember... it's a MadBaggins' thread...

Must... resist... replying...

I thought I'd already explained that the reason we athesist are so passionate and vocal is becasue we see that the world could be a much better place WITHOUT religion? Think about all the women who were burnt as witches. And scientists locked up in towers because they said the Earth was round. Even today women are still repressed because of religion all over the world. I saw a woman in a burkha right here in the good old USA the other day. They wouldn't have to suffer without religion. We'd have such amazing scientific advances by now if all those scientists hadn't been oppressed in the Dark Ages. Maybe even holodecks.

Anyway, I didn't see her again today. She's going to fail her classes if she keeps missing them like this! I was going to ask her friends but they kind of glared at me when I looked at them. What right do they have judging me? Doesn't their bible (I'm assuming their Christians too, this whole place is full of them) say "don't judge or you'll be judged? I bet they've done some crazy things in the name of love in their lives like I have. I only called her early once, it's not like I've been following her around harrassling her. I made sure to tell my college friends what had happened before anyone tried to spread any poison and they were sympathetic.

One interesting thing that happened is that I got a text from the church where I was helping out with her (I'd given my number to a lady there, no not to score with her, she was old lol) tell me they were having a major food collection soon. I guess it was just a standard text they sent to everyone. I wonder if I should go? I'm a hard worker and they'd appreciate my help.

So...you're now the Pope of Atheists? You can speak for the whole movement? Didn't think so. What you need to understand is that your little relevation is a microscopic event in the grand scheme of philosophy. Your regurgitations like the following:

Think about all the women who were burnt as witches. And scientists locked up in towers because they said the Earth was round.

Would get you flunked out of an intermediate philosophy class. Not theology, secular philosophy (non sequitur and modus ponens would be two dismissives). That's before we even get into what you personally believe. You haven't had time to settle into your new viewpoint long enough to realize the inherent tautology in rejecting a view that claims objective truth in favor of a new view that claims its own unfounded infinite wisdom.

As for your fictional story (it has to be fictional, because no adult in this country couldn't figure out a way to subtly bring up a conversation on the topic, even if they had to fake their own position) I think it's time to wrap it up. Good luck with that and your personal quest.

Classes are overrated. Heck, reading what you're supposed to read is overrated. I knew a guy who graduated with a university English degree and only read one book the whole time. He just read a lot of first chapters and Cliffs Notes. Hell, I once got stoned and aced an exam. You don't know how to do college.

The episode was going so well until it got so preachy. It's like it became a later episode of M*A*S*H when Alan Alda stopped being funny.
